As we've had a few dry days been able to ride a little harder. Got home and checked the chicken strips and noticed the front is close to the edge but the rears have at least 15mm. Should it not be the other way round? Please don't get me wrong, well past the kudos thing of having no chicken strips just wondering if the tyres are trying to tell me something?
Could be down to the tyre profile and if they are a matched pair or not. Other than that, you been playing with the geometry?
All my previous bikes have been the other way. Get the rears close to the edge but the fronts still have loads left, but all of those were nakeds. I'm riding hardish but nowhere near the blades limits,I'm kinda thinking I dont want to lean any more as I might wash out the front? Its always felt absolutely planted. I currently have BT16, my local honda dealer fitted a new pair for free as a sweetener so I guess they are matched. Will change these for probs 2cts in the summer. Only really tinkered with the preload to get around 38mm sag front and back. More curious than concerned.
I have 55 BSB's on mine but have not had much chance since fitting to push them too much. I have noticed that the front is closer to the edge than the rear which is different to most of my other tyres and bikes. I do think width of tyre and radius of curves has an effect. I also wonder if how much of a counter steerer a person is makes any difference. Having also had nakeds, I used to use quite aggressive counter steering and also do on the Blade . The sudden counter steer movement which then throws the front over may be a little harsher on the front tyre than the rear which perhaps goes over a little more slowly. Since switching to 55 from 50 I am not as close to the edge on the rear as I used to be, but then the 55 has a much rounder profile and there is not so much of a distinct 'edge'. With a 50, I could feel the lip on the edge of the tyre when I was at the limit, I get no feel of an edge on a 55.
Thanks exfire, as you said coming from Nakeds, I do occasionally counter steer quite aggressively. I do like to man handle the blade sometimes especially flicking through traffic and slow tight turns. I hope to do a few trackdays, no doubt it will change my riding style slightly.
My rear is near edge and front is further away, could be down too tyre choice, pressure, profile, suspension setup or just riding style???
Checked mine and there is none front or back so I would say Dont worry about running off the edge of one tyre before the other.
I think recommended sag should be around 38mm front, but 25mm rear. (although should really work it out as a % of total susp travel)
Hmmm, interesting, as a rule of thumb I try to get around 30% of the full travel Travel Sag front 137 41.1 rear 109 35.97 I increased the sag slightly at the rear just to get my feet down a little further, perhaps the travel measurements I have are wrong?
Interesting vid, I watch a lot of David Moss but not seen this one before. This is reinforcing the fact that strips at the front should always be fatter than the rear.
I don't know if there's anyone near you that does suspension setup but we have a guy near York that does it and it's well worth paying the money to have someone do it for you. I hate to get all evangelical about it but it's the best money I ever spent on any bike.
I guess you're right, had mine professionally done done on my previous bike but parameters always change (my waist seems to get bigger with age!). Also I did cover a module on suspension ( which of course makes me an expert!) at uni so a little bit of knowledge can be dangerous!
