My old TV (going to be replaced soon) has a USB port. I have a 500GB portable HD drive and before my holiday tried to add moved to this HD storage device. With the intention of watching movies from there on the TV. it came up on the TV but would not play the video. thinking the TV is to old (6 years old) and unable to run the movies. unsure what code they are in. MPEG4 etc...

Now I want to edit and put my holiday Vid from my camcorder and Go pro on the HD/HDSC card to watch on future TV's . the camcorder records in AVCHD, unsure on the Go Pro 1 I have. possible the same or MPG4. Can new TV's run these types of code?

Any suggestions on viewing footage on a TV?

I have always put video onto A DVD, which is a pain due to the liming size of them.

    Any good idea's ?

    cheers

    Matt

I find that tv's dont recognise alot of formats, best would be to get a good blueray player with usb, iv a samsung one and it plays sll formats avi, mp4 etc.

I've got a Samsung smart tv connected to the home wifi network in the house, any PC or laptop on the same network with windows media centre on it can be played through the telly. Son has a hd with dozens of movies on it (don't know where he gets them/ don't think I want to know) if he plugs it into his laptop upstairs I can call it up and watch them downstairs on big telly!

It also updates the divx codecs pretty regularly itself.

Another option for you is to download a program called Plex media server (it's free)

    1. Install this on your pc

    2. Create a folder on your computer a name it whatever you like

    3. Put all your movies you want to view on your big television in this folder.

    Leave your pc on

    4. Turn your ps3 on, look under videos and you will see it automatically finds your pc (plex media server) listed then just select which movie you want to watch on your ps3 and it streams it over your wifi network flawlessly.

It doesn't matter what format the movie file is in either

Good idea but I will have to allow my PS3 to access my PC which I don't think sharing is on

I don't think you even need to do that, I've been using it for ages now to stream mkv files that the ps3 doesn't support natively.

But I don't recall needing to enable file sharing

Give it a go its free and very quick to do

Also if you own any iPads or iPhone there is even a plex app for them

Common issue - Click triangle, then display all and you might find they appear (can't guarantee PS3 can read them though, may need to stream and convert via media server as mentioned by Andy)

In Plex there is a movie folder at the top left of the screen click on that and it should ask you to sync it to a folder.

Simply choose the folder you have your movies/videos stored in. Then every time you add a new movie or video to the folder there is a refresh icon at the top right of the screen
Simply refresh and it will put your new movie or video.

To make sure your ps3 picks the Plex media server up make sure the option in settings is ticked to auto find media servers.
