Bit of an odd one this and probably me being a bit paranoid but just wondering what sort of temp the crank cases normally run at. I did about 80 mile on the bike last weekend, last couple of mile was through traffic but it never seemed to get unduly hot according to the gauge. When I got back I decided to give it a wash and noticed the water was almost sizzling off the crankcase covers , I didn’t think much of it but as I was finished I checked the headers and they had cooled right down but the covers were still too hot to touch, the bikes may well run hot but this seems hot compared to previous bikes, may have thinner crankcase covers as well though. Coolant level and oil level is normal and only recent change is an akrapovic slip on, no fuelling mods carried out. Thoughts?
I don't wash my bike when it warm as I let it cool first but the crankcases will retain the heat longer than the header pipes as there is more mass there, thicker wall thickness, engine block, internals plus oil etc all retaining heat. I wouldn't like to touch it when warm but I would be surprised that under normal operating conditions that they got hot enough to make water hiss and turn to steam on contact.
Yeah, cheers for that, I’m probably coming across as a bit thick but I know they get hot, it’s an engine after all but these particular covers seemed to be almost exhaust hot, I’ll keep an eye on it.
