Swapped out my 08 rear shock for a 12 rear shock and it was fine.. for a while. Since having tyres changed a couple of days ago I now get a Creaking/Clicking/Pinging sound from it whenever I apply load to it. Before I go stripping the whole thing down, has anyone experienced anything like this before? Any answers much appreciated.
Have a look any issues around shock linkage...............I seem to remember a long while back someone having huge wear issues and posting pics (not necessary from 2012 shock fitting though).....
Id just remove look for any wear as said above lightly grease on reinstall and make sure all torque setting correct and nothing binding
As the above had said take out clean up and make sure you grease all the linkages, double check the spring for any cracks
Thanks for the replies! I'll pull it off this weekend and have a good check and grease up. What kind of grease is recommended?
General automotive grease from Halfrauds will do, as there will be no heat at those points, you will only need a small tube or tin and will be handy for greasing other bits on your bike, like head stock bearings, wheel centre bars etc. As for the noise, make sure you have no score marks on the bottom dog link plates, as sometimes the shock can move over far enough to rub against the plates, I normally place a shim to suit to prevent it. If you tap the linkage to one side slightly and then push the suspension down again, the noise will come and go as you move the linkage, or try spinning the spring around slightly.
Yeah, I urrr, just read that back. Sounds like something the missus would wanna be involved in! Thanks for the reply there man, that's really useful advice!
Well, I found the problem - the outer race on one of the needle bearings on the shock linkage was totally corroded - the pins just dropped out once I removed the inner race. Hopefully this'll help someone in future!
It needed new needle roller bearing. DIY job. Sorry to resurrect an old thread. But it got a mention in a recent thread. Perhaps the teflon washers would've saved me £30.
