Hi, so this came up today, What do the 1000rr guys think? One of the chaps checked his oil level this morning and it was below the min, he had none at home so rode the bike to the shop to get some, topped it off and it only needed 200 ml or so. There were conflicting views as to whether he will have screwed it up or not on that short run. My view - a short run and only a couple hundred ml down is highly unlikely to cause any damage ( not based on anything other than it can only have just been below the glass to only need a bit) .... Others however reckon its a big no no, and he could have caused internal damage. What do you think, do modern bikes have such little tolerances?
If it only needed 200ml then I think it will be fine. It would still have nearly 3 litres left in it.
Agree, when racing we run some bikes low on oil or they blow it up through the crank breathers, catch tanks norm give a good indication of if your in the ball park with race bikes... Otherwise like MrB says its such a small amount on the stick no problem, if he had added two litres then maybe a problem, I'd have rode it no worries.
Cheers, like I say, that was my logic too. Btw, it was gsxr750, would a smaller cc still have circa 3 litres in it?
As posted i've had to add 400mil of Oil after my tour last year. Only top up it needed in the first 4k. And had no issues since
