A mate has a few. Feed them on anything, literally anything they consume the lot.Hardest part is keeping them safe and secure from foxes, cats and crows/magpies.Plenty of eggs in the morning and the rooster will make his noise.Some neighbours love it and some loathe it.
They produce more than eggs, and in vast very smelly quantities. And to get eggs in the winter you will have to light them. Mike.
My Dad converted a shed into a hen hutch a few years ago. He used to get eggs quite regukarly for a few years and then they mostly stopped laying. Don't think they took that much looking after, but I'm not sure he saved that much money on the eggs, although at least he knew the eggs were fresh etc. Oh yeah if you let them on to the grass they will scratch it back to earth in no time.
Oh that's not lookin like so much fun now. I do eat at least 4 eggs a day. Not sure the neighbours would like noise
I had chickens and they are fine. If you want eggs go and buy eggs not chickens. it's cheaper and less hassle. If you want a bit of a hobby then chickens are good. The hardest part is keeping the foxes out

My mum has 6 chickens. Horrid little things. Actually more intelligent than you may think too. Smelly Just buy a family pack of eggs. Much better idea mate And a Hamster lol
Father in law had a dozen on the farm just as a hobby easy to keep but about a month ago a fox wiped them out so he is not bothering ...Keep in mind a fox is also not just rural .My son lives on an estate and one jumped his garden fence and was pratting about in his garden .
I have seen first hand " Newcastle Disease" Symptoms are usually very large swelled stomach,victims normaly stick together in large groups for comfort ( A football match would be ideal) as the condition is irritating the main cure seems to be taking your shirt off and gulping down copious amounts of brown ale whilst singing your heart out and crying ( at the end of the season)
