Heard others with similar, usually just a normal 'trait'. If it's using shitloads tho, i've heard it's worn rings usually due to poor running in procedure and/or using synthetic oil during the running in. not sure if thats just bollocks though. Do I remember correctly the original blade got stripped and it was found those that had been thrashed from the off made more power than ones which had been run in gently?
you can phone Mr Honda who will tell you to go to your nearest dealer who will run a test on it to see how much oil is being burnt, if it is a very high consumption of oil then they will give it new pistons and rings but this is very rare, i believe honda think that using about 600ml of oil to cover 1000miles is acceptable so in most cases they will not do anything, nearly all 2008 and 2009 blades burn oil just some burn more than others
Let the engine warm up before taking her out.It could be getting past the valve stem seals whilst cold.
Break In Secrets--How To Break In New Motorcycle and Car Engines For More Power yep i remember reading this a while back and it backs up what your saying
I had the rings changed when i had this problem on my previous blade - 2010 model. It used around 700ml in 700 miles
i know mine is burning oil as the tips of my exhaust are dis-coloured and my ridding buddies say it does stink of oil when they follow me but i have only put in 200-300mls and i have covered 2500miles. the oil level is still quite high on the dipstick aswell so i think im 1 of the lucky ones i guess im wrong thinking it only affected the 2008 and 2009 models, does anybody know of oil burning in the 2011+ models
My 2011 model burns approx 500ml oil every 1000 miles, i took it back to the dealer and they said it's a common thing on the Fireblades. Jay
If you kick up a stink chances are they will change the rings. Not sure if its worth it though as chances are the new ones will do the same. It is very poor of Honda to leave this fault as they have, but as others will tell you, just keep putting oil in and keep an eye on it. Other bikes have far more serious issues. I was told the "new" model will have the same issue as well. The engineer at my dealer has said the problem is with the depth of the pistons. as with all short stroke high revving engines, the piston is short. The skirt of the piston just below the rings goes down to around a length of only 2mm. Look at a photo of blade pistons on ebay - you will see. I cant say i am happy with Honda on this, but power is always a trade off.
Mine does use oil, been told it's perfectly normal and common on a 10 plate- the 929 doesn't use a single drop, bizzare really
i must have the only one in europe that is not an oil burner. I changed the oil after 3000kmh as i do with all my bikes and the level was the same as always. ive done near 4000kmh on it now and she hasnt burnt a drop. and im not the first owner so there is now 19k on it.
