    What's everyone's view on this?

I recall my riding instructor saying that it's a complete no-no.
If you want to slow down, pull in the clutch and brake, sort out your gearing and continue.

He also said that engine braking is very bad for your engine.

I have always used engine braking to a degree along with the front brake and being able to smoothly incorporate both down through the gears is something that gives me satisfaction as it's quite difficult to master, especially on sport bikes.

I don't see how it can damage your engine either as it's surely just the reciprocal of acceleration only that load on the engine is on a downshift.
