A friend of mine who is looking to get back into biking after a few years away wants to buy a fireblade after trying mine. He has went to see a couple for sale and has his heart set on a nice Repsol RR-7 that is for sale locally. I went to view the bike with him and everything checks out. Low miles, well looked after, good service history, few nice mods etc. The one thing I noticed however was that there was sealant around the engine casings that was obviously not from the factory so the casings have been off at some stage. Should he be concerned? Possible gearbox repair carried out at some stage (or worse)? The bike only has 11K on it. Thoughts?
That sounds normal. The casings are fitted with liquid gasket http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motor...ne-liquid-gasket-hondabond-ht-black-100g-tube , not a separate gasket. My old RR6 had some excess around the casings when I bought it new.
I'm just comparing it to my RR-7, where you can barely see the gasket compound around the casings. The bike he's looking at has quite messy gasket compound around the casing edges which suggests to me that they've been removed and re-sealed.
As Ian E told black liquid gasket is honda OEM , gearbox repair on a sc57 04-07 can be done without split the cases as those bikes come with a cassette gearbox Will be more interesting check out alternator/ rectifier conditions
