Today I am officially Manchester's maddest man!!!

In 16 years of tinkering with bikes I have never had so much trouble in taking off a bikes fairings. I was attempting to fit my new GB racing engine covers, to do so you need to remove the fairings. To be fair I didn't have much time, only about 5 hours o_O but an hour in an I resorted to watching videos on you tube and still couldn't get the job done!!

Why have Honda made this such a difficult task?? In the end I rang Hunts for advice and they told me to bring the covers in (while laughing at me down the phone) and they'd fit them for me when the bike goes in for a service next Wednesday. Big thanks to Scott who offered to do this, but I would still like some tips for future reference as I'm possibly buying a spare set of bodywork for track use.

Needless to say I will be drowning my sorrows tonight and the Mrs will probably get a bollocking over something minor as well haha

There is no need to remove the fairing to fit GB covers, just remove the bottom Allan bolts so you can ease the fairing out a bit.

Which model year do you have, and does it have ABS?

Hi Iain......its an '09 non ABS. When I started I didn't think it was going quite so difficult and I wanted to do the job properly so the fairings were coming off.

Now you've mentioned that it would be worth a try....is that how you did it?? I'd still like info on how to do it for future reference though, cheers.

Yes, mine is a 14, but all I did was undo the bottom fairing bolts.
I did find the ABS cover would not fit properly after, so I removed it.

I usually take the side fairing off with the ram air tubes and covers all in one piece. Undo the side bolt on the fairing, remove all the pushpins near the radiator. Remove the inner ram air cover ( 3 push pins), remove the one bolt that connects the ram air to the head fairing. Once this is done, pull the whole fairing and ram air off the bike. easy mate.

2014 models have different fairings to the 09 models, the engine covers are much more exposed on yours mate.

Still worth a try but there are definitely a few bolts completely covered that couldn't be got at just by bending the fairing out a little.

Once the fairing bolts are off, you can literally "yank" the inner black plastic parts near the brake and clutch levers off .
Tip, get some new black fairing screws ( 3 types) from Honda for when you put the fairing back on.

On the 08-12 the clutch side 2 of the cover bolts are a pain, easier to remove the fairing.
You'll get used to it, once you know which fixings need removing you'll whip the feckers off in no time
