CAN ANYBODY TELL ME WHY OUR COUNCILS RESURFACE OUR ROUNDABOUTS WITH A TARMAC THAT HAS NO ADHESIVE QUALITYS , SOAKS UP DIESEL & IS F**KING LETHAL. ON MY WAY TO WORK THIS MORNING( ON MY DAILY TRANSPORT, MOUNTAIN BIKE) , USUAL RIDE, GET TO SAID ROUNDABOUT, GO AROUND,NO WARNING , FULL ON HEAD PLANT INTO THE TARMAC. FEW MINOR INJURIES, CUTS WHERE NO CLOTHING HAS RIPPED, THUMB OBVIOUSLY BENT THE WRONG WAY IN THE CRASH. CUTS TO FACE, KNEES , HIP & ARM. WHAT F**KED ME OFF THE MOST WAS THAT I DID IT AT RUSH HOUR WHERE EVERYBODY WAS STOPPED WAITNG TO GET ON ROUNDABOUT. NORMALLY WHEN I COME OFF YOU GET THAT WARNING & CAN PREPARE YOURSELF FOR LANDING ,BUT THIS WAS A FULL ON NO HANDS OUT LANDING. RIGHT MOAN OUT OF THE WAY, WHY OH WHY DO THEY PUT THIS FINISH ON A ROUNDABOUT, IT IS BLACK TARMAC, FLAT AS F**K & EXTREMELY SLIPPERY?
shit - not good news fella! sorry to hear it... had a similar thing on my commuter - K1100, tipped into roundabout, lost all front end on poor surface laced with diesel, managed to pull it up and save, but by the time i got traction i was square on to the roundabout (raised type with chevron above kerb etc) then hurtled towards hit the kerb, went up and over a section of the roundabout taking a few of the flowers with me!! how i stayed on i dont know but managed to dislocated my thumb hanging on! quite a comedy moment for the cars watching, but scared the shite out of me, not to mention nearly smashing the bike and myself up! so feel for ya pal, know how bad they are, hope you on the mends soon and the bike isnt too bad.
Ouch mate hope your OK. and worth mentioning to the local council about this if it's that bad it's prob going to be worse if your on a motorbike
Palmers roundabout, even walking on it when damp it`s like a f**kin ice rink, mite give council a ring. As i only live up the road from it, as soon as they resurfaced it a couple of months ago , i just new it would make things worse, that r/bout & Asda one are always having diesel thrown down on them. Thumb has restrictive movement , but i dont think its broke, pushbike is o.k. What peeved me is that i had to have a massive audience when i did it! Strange thing is that i wear a hi viz jacket & nothing was ripped or had holes in apart from my knees , hip & face, but i did have greasy black tarmac marks all over jacket & face( strange?). its as though its still oily?
I will look out for that one then, didnt realise it had been redone recently, I almost lost the front of the bike on the asda r/bout on diesel, luckly just caught it Saying that most of the roads around here are v poor at the moment. Glad your not to badly injured, its always worst when your pride takes a knock with people watching, at least it wasn't the blade
If i modify the Castrol on there i will go fookin apeshit, what was nice was the white van man who was waiting to go across the r/bout get out of his van & ask if he could give me a lift somewhere, there are humans out there after all, not like the c**ts who put in Dan`s car window!!
Just contacted Highways Agency & filled them in on my incident, apparently going to get someone to have a look at the ice rink, sorry , roundabout.
They do have a duty of care mate, if it was diesel. There was a thread on here not so long ago regarding the procedure. Palmers is always crap. Stopping in a hurry on it is almost as bad. If your hi viz stuff survived unscathed I suggest painting your hands, knees and face with luminous paint.
I just drove past a beautiful Ducatti being scraped off the black stuff on a roundabout. They can be lethal this time of year. On the bright side, at least your blade is ok
Sorrry to hear of your off mate. Here's the thread Ken mentioned. http://1000rr.co.uk/general-1000rr-discussion/2044.htm
That's shit mate, speedy recovery. On the plus side not many of us have got our knee down so early in the year !!!
My head went down first followed by everything else! I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO SAY THAT IF THERE ARE ANY CYCLIST`S OUT THERE, PLEASE WEAR A HELMET, YES YOU MAY LOOK A TWAT, BUT MINE SAVED MY HEAD THIS MORNING, I.E. I NEED A NEW BYCYCLE HELMET!!
+1 on the cyclists wearing helmets. I was lucky as I had a massive accident just one day after buying mine. Broke my leg really badly. Choose a brightly coloured one too. It makes it easier to aim.
I always wear one as my son jumped on his mates bike collided with another lad and ended up at Southampton Hospital with 3 seperate bleeds on his brain.............very testing few days they were i can tell you.
I find it hard to believe the council /Highways have put down Road surface of poor quality the reason i say that is that there are strict guidelines on the construction of roads and any contractor would have to tender for what is specified and on delivery there would normaly be a jobsworth engineer checking ect .I am no expert but there is something called a PEN Value of which there should be so many of the polished stone /aggregate per sq meter to conform with non slip. may be worth looking this up and you never know .There is also a product called SMA Smooth Mastic Ashpalt which is very hard wearing and a bit smoother but there should be the right materal for the right road surface .Any Scousers on here they will have the answers lol.
Yep your right Givover. Different types of asphalt for different types of road. These take into account wear, drainage, grip, acoustics, etc. A texture on a 30mph stretch of road does not have the Grip capacity as that of a 50mph road. Sounds strange, but if the tarmac was nice and grippy, why would they come along and cover it with the "anti skid" at crossings etc. The one that does grip my shit is the "winter dressing" we have on our countrysides roads. You know the one, they spray tar and stick 8mm chips to it to aid grip in the winter months. They usually do it round our parts June July and August
The particular place where T had his off is a bloody death trap. Marinated in diesel, petrol, 10w 50, snot, blood, the occasional split open cyclist and god knows what else from endless heavy goods traffic. The area's peppered with surface changes too. Concrete, asphalt, cobbles probably.
This new area of tarmac is smooth as f**k & always seems very shiny, as i said in previous post, my jacket , & jeans didn`t tear, they just ended up with black tar marks on them, if you turn my jeans into the light the area with the black marks goes shiny(grease/oil) ( as you have probably guessed i didn`t bother going into work today & have had a lot of time to mull this over)>>
