Bit of a tradition from when I lived in Oxfordshire was to visit Fairford in the summer This year weather was better thankfully - but not perfect for photos but some here XH558 - Avro Vulcan More pics to follow...
Misc2 And that's the best of the 900+ I fired off! All above were resized down (uploaded files are about 60kb) - originals full size - sure some editing would like colours and improve them further but don't think any are good enough to sell as did not get settings right looking at them - taken with a 400D and the kit 90 - 300 lens (non stabilized)
Don't misunderstand me, I think they're incredible too. I just look at them in the air and think it's some kind of Derren Brown trick that it gets there in the first place. That's what makes me grin.
Know what you mean Ken, when it takes off and goes past my house I wonder the same thing - how is all that weight getting airborne - it's not noisy either
I remember the Airbus demonstration pilot at Farnborough just after the initial flights doing a touch and go on its main gear only, nose gear as high as safe for the tail, leaning out of his window waving to the crowd as it trundled down the runway then just stepped off the ground again in a high alpha climb out with, what looked like a tip stall, but definitely wasn't, at the end of it.... I've been drooling over aircraft since I was old enough to know what they were, but I watched that thinking, 'No...That didn't just happen....did it?' Yes, I know the Vulcan has been doing something similar since the '50s but you know that's not magic when it does, that's just raw, obscene grunt, as my tinnitus now proves. That thing looks like it's being pulled off the ground with strings.
Thanks for the posting Al .Its strange for me as I love anything to do with jets but I have it in my head that most Airshows end in tears so won't go thinking one is bound to land in the crowd " examples on You-tube folks .I am not usually toy about any subject but this one spooks me out .I will however visit the Mach Loop ? With Barney because that would be amazing .
I always feel safe at airshows. Protected by the piece of rope hung between rebar spikes, the length of the flight line. Content in the knowledge that it can deflect an exploding Rolls Royce Trent long before it can reach me. However, you remember that recurring nightmare I told you about...I can't help but think of it every time I'm at one...
hey al - that brings back a ton of memories for me - youve done some superb photography not to mention these a/c are not standing still to pose - thanks for sharing them.
No, mate. Not quite as necessary over here and bloody expensive to boot. I can shout over the fence to my neighbours, you guys have to pack an over night back to talk to yours. Or has Skippy been lying to me all these years...?
Great pics, used to go to quite a lot of airshows when every RAF airfield used to have one, loved watching the Vulcan perform, last saw it display 1993,though I have seen it a couple of times flying in the York area at altitude of course,1.Flying,2.Motorcycling!
