I was just thinking about this the other night. We often go riding in groups and I thought it would be good if one or more of us was trained in first aid....specifically RTA first aid just in case something happened. God forbid. I think I'm going to sign up for a course. Anyone else think there'd be any value in this?
Been a first aider for years mate One of the best things I've ever done Dealt with a serious incident with my mum a few years ago .. Could of lost her
Yeah that's the kind of thing I was thinking. I mean if something happened right now with a mate whilst riding I wouldn't really know what the hell to do!
Kent Firebrigade (i think) do a motorcycle 1st aid course at brands hatch, specific to Bike RTA's, few on here that have done it if memory serves me right. Sure someone will put their hand up, find out what their thoughts were of it, there might be a similar thing up by you? keep meaning to book myself onto it.... Myself and a mate were first on the scene to a serious RTA involving 2 cars on the way back from work when I was 18, I found a work mate slumped in the passenger seat of one of the cars involved, we did all we could but he was prounounced dead at the scene, I blamed myself for ages, thought if I had done things differently he may have survived, I was wrong and the report said he died instantly, but after that I always put myself forward for first aid courses etc. I think it is great you are thinking of doing a course like this and I would defo sign up for one in my area if it was available, you can never truly prepare yourself for an incident like this but knowing the first steps will make a massive difference for all involved.
mine has come into play quiet a few times but fortunately only three major. one in Scarborough with a small with a boy slipped on rocks fell a good distance banged head, stopped breathing. (family still send Christmas card every year) a car accident just second in front of me, i manager to save the passenger... driver was definitely dead so didn't waste time trying to save. that was the longest ten minute of my life trying to sing nelly the elephant in my head.( on repeat) and a stabbing in Huddersfield. so yes do it don't be the person to walk on bye. most cost 30 - 100 quid depending on length and quality. Been a First aider for a few years now through work, we get 300 quid a year for doing it, working within the chemical industry I've had to deal with a few things. Went on a call today infact, A female worker was leaving work for lunch and a car turned right into the side of her car! She was ok, Poor sod is just getting over a motorbike accident that happend last September.
We do emergency first aid at work, Just hope I never have to put it into practice but if I did I'm glad I've been trained on correct techniques and what to do etc
A few of my mates have done this and said it was very good. I will be looking to do something similar this year. Motorcycle Info Pages - Ride Safe, STAY SAFE! > FBOS - First Bike On Scene
I am first aid trained from work and fortunately only ever had to use it once for anything really serious. About 6 years ago was with a mate on the route Napolean in France and came across an accident where a scooter rider had been hit by a HGV. The HGV driver obviously had been taught to make sure he supported the bikers head and not remove the helmet.... unfortunately the rider had an open fracture of his leg and was bleeding... A LOT!! I used some rope from the HGV to apply a tourniquet which slowed the bleeding down until the ambulance arrived.... Never did find out how the lad got on afterwards?! From my point of view I would go for it if I was you... you could be the difference between someone surviving and someone not!
