I have just noticed some oil at the base of the front right hand fork. I imagine the seal has gone. Is it a big job to replace it? I am ok riding the bike to the dealers, just case they have to do it?
It's not an easy job unless you have the tools mate. Depends on how bad the leak is really, but if anything other than a slight leak I wouldn't chance riding it.
It's gonna be like a pogo stick. It'll take a fair bit of oil for it to go dry mate. There's about a pint in there.
Would be wise to have both my forks done at the same time? If one seal has gone, then it is quite likely the other might go shortly. And do people have their forks serviced every few years?
From experience, thoroughly check your stancion for pits or other blemishes. Could be the stancion has developed a blemish which has trashed the seal.
Yes might as well have both done, and fork oil should be changed every 2-3 years. If you are mechanically minded it's not to difficult to change the oil. I've changed oil and seals on several different blades without problems,
I have a shock oil and seal replacement video available to watch. It's Dave Moss who is a suspension expert. Got videos on BPF forks and forks from am RR7
Dave Moss is great, I've watched all his suspension tuning videos, I'd be interested to see the one on the BPF forks service.
Yes get both done. The place you are getting it done should check the stantions for any pitting or even a stone chip which can cause the seal to leak
Try seal mate first. It is a plastic tool designed to remove dirt that is trapped between the seal and fork leg. One of my fork legs was leaking last year, and i used seal mate, it hasnt leaked since, so it wasnt a faulty seal, just some dirt in between.
