My big trip this year is going to end up in the Ardeche region of France, at the end of the D906, has anyone been around there or Le Puy en Velay area and knows of any decent places to stay ?

I don't, shipmate. I always check the 'Rough Guide' series of books for accomodation. Had some gleaming results.

Have you tried a serious internet search?

If it's only a place to crash Ibis is reliable.

We usually try and avoid the chain hotels Lambeth and find either somewhere off the mobikehotels list or prior recommendations, we went there about 8 years ago but it looks like the little b&b we used then has folded.

Done some Internet searches but a lot of the places are a bit pricy and twee looking for what we want.

Rough Guide to France, shipmate. Mustard guide. It's got independents listed in all price ranges.
