Went to get the bike out tonight only to find the rear tyre totally flat. had a quick check and yep there it is a lovely mark right in the centre of the tyre. I have only had it on for 1 month and dont have the money right now to get a new 1.

Anybody had their tyres repaired and are they safe to give it a handfull once they have been fixed

Just had the rear sportsmart repaired after finding a wacking great screw right in the middle of the tyre, local shop repaired it with a mushroom plug like they have in the past and assure me its good for safe use upto 160mph ..

i had one plugged on my old Z750.
If the tyre is fairly new and the damage is central they will repair.

Fez. Not something I would want to risk doing. I am surprised in this day and age of risk that anyone is prepared to do a repair and potentially be responsible for you crashing.

I would never personally use a repaired tyre. on my old 600 I had a bad run, I got a puncter at the end of the month 3 months on the trot, That was expensive!!

Had a brand new tyre done, forgot about it and went on a track day with a plug! No issues...

Would have been worried about it if I remembered though...

And I've also plugged mates tyres abroad for them to hold for the rest of the trip... And we don't hang about once we are off the queens highways lol

As Jimbo above, I had a rear Michelin Piolet Power 2ct plugged and ragged it until it worn out on trackdays at both Brands and Lydden Hill.

No issues with it whatsoever, if it's on the first 15% from the sides, any decent tyre fitter will not touch it with a barge pole.

In the centre section, you should have no issues as long as it's fitted correctly.

I would keep an eye on the tyre pressure if you get it plugged, if it keeps on losing a few psi over a short period of time, check the repaired area with water to see if it's leaking air.
If it is, get a new tyre fitted asap.

A few years back tyre manufacturers had to come up with guide lines on safety after a repair. None of the leading companies would commit themselves stating they could'nt guarantee a repair on 180 sections and above. Local tyre fitters flatly refused to repair my tyre and ended up doing them myself. Plugged a tyre on the M25 told the owner to take it easy until a more permanent repair could be done, boys being boys he wheelied the bike all up the slip road. NUTTER

Had a rear Dunlop Qualifier plugged by a local independent tyre company. Put a couple of thousand miles on it, never gave it a second thought, no problems.

if its in the centre its fine think most places will repair a tyre if the puncture is no more than 30mm from the centre. if it was me and the tyre was like new i would have it plugged but say i had done 1500/2000 miles i would bin it.

Thanks for all of the advice. i dont really have any choice but take it to my local garage and see if it can be repaired as i just dont have the money right now for a new 1, but even if i did i think i would still give it a go. It wont bother me having it plugged everybody who has had them done seems to have no issues at all. thanks guys cant tell you how gutted i was when i first looked at it

Did the tyre have a plug already in and it failed or did you get a puncture while you were out

I repair my own with quality plugs and I ride as I did before the puncture I fit the same plugs with a patch over the inside of the mushroom to be sure they do not leak not that they would to anyone that asks tyre and I charge 20.00 to plug the tyre as the plugs are top qual and so is the adhesive to give you an idea of cost as I have heard aome charge 60-100.00! The guidelines are centre or the tyre only but that's not so hard to understand why would you plug the side walls, tbh near all tyre centres can and do plug tyres but they are selective over who's! they like me are happy to plug there own but in a world of claim care need to be taken to protect our (the fitters) interests the other reason they won't do them is simple....money....they make more on a new tyre. I am happy to fit them to anyone's tyre as long as they understand what I have said, in other words if you crash don't try and blame my plug! Tbh modern tyres IMO are more likely to fail for a number of performance related issues than the plug it's self what I mean is have you any idea how thin and little meteral actually supports you when you do 180mph on a supercorsa tyre? They are around 2mm thick! some tyres can not be plugged as so little meteral is left after cleaning the area where the mushroom is fixed. Well that's some of my views....lol

As far as I'm aware tubeless motorbike tyres are not to be repaired and most fitters will not do it. My brothers neighbour in Devon had a rear tyre blow but he never got to know that!! Now I'm not suggesting and nor do I know whether his blow out was as a result of a puncture repair or something else but what I do know is that I would not ride on anything less than a perfect tyre, its not worth it and one could argue you wouldn't enjoy the ride knowing the risk you would be taking?
