My 13 plate seems to have a very long shift change between 1st and 2nd gears and sometimes it goes from 1st then into neutral then I have to change from neutral into 2nd.

All the linkage seems tight an secure, the only thing I want to do is lower the shift lever slightly so may ankle is at a more comfortable angle.
I have noticed Gilles sell a shift rod assist bearing thing, do these help in any way?

The Gilles shift assist stops the flex in the shaft making more positive changes but only helps if your lever is in the right position for you in the first place! I changed my lever more downwards as was having similar problems with it in the standard position the bike came with

Agreed. Get the position right first. Can make a big difference.
