After swapping to race pattern and testing I noticed that the selector shaft could move in and out about 10mm, at one extreme it works fine at the other no shift, the only thing I can think of is when tapping the linkage on to the splined selector shaft (with rubber hammer) I have damaged some retainer??? Please advise.
I have about 2mm of movement and have seen some with about 3 or 4mm of movement but 10mm doesn't sound right....

Arthur I need the bike on the track this weekend and the next 2 and have little time to do the fix. I was thinking of sliding some 12mm or so length fuel pipe with appropriate washer at either end over the selector shaft to space it out and prevent it sliding back in. Do you think this will work. Also would you be so kin d as to explain how I fix it proprerly. Many thanks Rich
Hi Rich, yes I do think it would work, to fix the problem you will need to remove the clutch and basket to extract the shaft, you should clearly see where it is bent/broken.
If the bike is on a side stand it should be ok to remove the cover your welcome, and good luck, hope it's just the retaining clip as I am sure it is.
I had this on my 2010 blade, was sorted under warranty there is a small tab as Arthur says on the clutch side which holds the gear shift star in place mine had bent out so if you tapped the gear lever with your foot it would push the rod through enough to move the star off and not change gear. Quick fix is tywraps along the gear shaft to stop it from moving in proper fix clutch cover off then bend back the tab, I would be very surprised if its broken unless you have dropped the bike hard on that side !
