Just seen on the BBC News that some local authorities have been spreading salt on the road as it absorbs the bitumen caused by high temperatures expected over the next few days

The linked news article doesn't explain why it's a good thing for bikers, and I can't fathom it. Would you mind explaining?

The grit / stone powder is good because otherwise the molten road surfaces will set as smooth tar (until they wear down to stones) which is lethal in the wet to bikes. But the application of grit will bed in and give grip

I think Charlie's right too. They gritted in Sheffield Council area last night, but in Derbyshire and especially the Peak District which has many more rural areas prone to frost and was much colder overnight they only gritted the snake and buxton high roads. Which says to me that s yorks has more surplus grit.
