Thinking of getting a bike for green laning this winter, can anyone recommend a good all rounder?

Would need something road legal to commute to and from places...

honda xr 400 seem to be bullet proof, older technology but go forever and 90 percent of them are all ready road registered. any highly strung 4t enduro/mx bikes can have stupidly frequent service regime and in the case of the crf, wr range can be pigs to start once hot unless your electric start.

Can't go wrong with an old XR250, quick enough on the roads, and light enough to pick up in a rut. Had one for a couple of years 99-2000, proper laugh on a sunny day on the moors and reasonable enough as a commuter if going less than 15/20 miles I reckon.

But if I had the money I'd get a crf250 and save my kick starting leg from the scars and exhaustion that the XR caused.

Have a look on here, xrv.org.uk

Did 3 days trail riding in Spain on a Yam TTR250 and, although quite underwhelming to look at and a bit long in the tooth now, it did everything asked of it very well and they have a good reputation for being robust and relaible.

Honda XR650R, it'll handle anything you throw at it. Reliability speaks volumes.
