OK a old SLR but i've lost the charge mount for the battery and would either like to get a new charger or look at maybe get a new camera body but and keep the lens

Now this was and is my only SLR and from googling found it its Interchangeable via Minolta A-type bayonet mount. So a A-type mount. I know Sony took over from Konika in 2006 and they use a A mount.

Any idea of a newer camera that used the same lens as my D5? Would it be any new Sony SLR's?

    cheers peps

Matt. It's the Sony alpha series you need to look at, that's what A mount evolved into. I don't think the Sony NEX range is compatible with it though, so stay away from them.

Is it a good lens? As it might be worth you cutting your losses and going for a more readily available system like Nikon or canon, as that's where the deals are to be found. I've been out of the camera business for too long to be completely up to date, I'm afraid though, mate.

Ken, I have 3 good lenses. One for distance, a prime lens and the one that came with the camera which is also good. thing is I looked at the Sony SLR and they are expensive as fook. I bought for £8 a charger for my SLR and may just put up with that for now

But would like to get a sony maybe at some point

Sony have always been a bit that way, I'm afraid. They come up with some quirky ideas, some good, some bad but try and make you pay through the nose for them. If you've got some decent glass already it'll pay to try and stick with the format if you can. Just be aware that it will always be that bit harder to expand your system with the Sony brand.
