Good morning everyone, New to the forum. Currently got a 2001 Kawasaki zx6r and looking to buy my first “big bike”. 100% looking to go down the fire blade route. Looking to buy a 09/10 model but I’m hesitating to commit due to this oil burning issue. Is this something I need to be concerned about and avoid these years or is it something not to worry about. Any advise would be appreciated. Looking forward to being part of the forum Thanks Sam
Hi and welcome to the forum - read the abs thread here https://www.1000rr.co.uk/threads/im...d-if-you-own-an-abs-2009-onwards-model.11881/ and make an informed decision if you get one crop up in your search (wish I had)
Hi Sam welcome to the forum, I'm sure you will receive answers to your question from people more qualified than me but good luck with the search.
Hi Sam and welcome 08 plates (gold engine casings) are reported to have oil issues but I can comment first hand - iirc 08-11 can all suffer with a “chocolate” 3rd gear, it often goes but it would depend how hard you shift - I believe Quickshifters add to this issue. Otherwise, ABS as per @boothmans comment. I’ve got a 2011 and so far so good (touch wood!) There’s a wealth of people own that era Blades here so I’m sure you’ll be able to access lots of information. happy hunting
Hello and welcome. My mate, brother and nephew have a 2008, 2010 and 2011 respectively with no “oil burning issues”. I think there was a batch of 08’s had an issue, but I would imagine they were rectified under warranty. ABS would be more of a concern, personally I’d get the latest model with the least mileage that my budget would allow.
This is great. It’s given me a direction for my searches. Thankyou Couldn’t help but notice your name... this is my other toy.
Thank you. So I should be paying more attention to abs rather than oil consumption. Can you just explain what you mean by crop up. I’m new to this
Hi, just meant that whilst you are searching if you come across an ABS model (pre 2017) you should be aware of the back story. No doubt there are bikes out there that have never had an issue, but IMO (and speaking from experience) why take the risk? Unless it was in great condition, dirt cheap and you are capable/intend to remove the system completely as soon as you get it. And I would hasten to add there are guides on here for doing just that. You pay your money and you take your chance. Good luck in your search
