Hi all, I installed an HM Plus Quickshifter a day or two ago, and despite some difficulty fitting the plugs onto the ignition coils in the cramped space, I got the electric side of things done fine. Problems however mounted up when changing the Gilles Adjustable Rearset shift rod for the new HM one and QS. All sizes are correct and I unscrewed the shift rod and replaced it with the new assembly, and tried to shift gears: I got 1/2/3/4/5th but a false neutral on shifting to 6th. I tried to adjust the travel on the shifter and found I now only had 1/2/3rd! Without changing a thing I had a cup of tea and went back to the bike and suddenly I found I’m stuck in neutral. The shift level will click up and down but seemingly not enough to change the gear in either direction. I changed back to the original shift rod and I have the same problem so I know it’s mechanical not electric. I’m on the verge of packing it in and calling a local garage to come and collect the bike and fix it. Any ideas guys? Thanks in advance. Martin
Check the Splined spindle for sideways play (the part that the shift rod attaches to). Mine had a similar issue and pulling it away from the bike allowed me to change gears again.
Have you moved the bike since trying for gears? Try rocking it forwards and backwards it should grab the gear. Mind on the stand once you press the gear lever nothing happens. But when its running or you move it slightly it gets gears
When on the stand, I can click the gears up and down and nothing happens......the lever moves but it doesn’t change gear and I get the dashed indication on the gear indicator . If however, upon every movement of the shift lever, I then roll the bike forwards or backwards an inch or two, it finds the gear I wanted. So to go from 1st to 3rd for example, I click lever up....nothing....roll forwards an inch and it’s finds 2nd, click up.....nothing.....roll forwards another few inches and it finds third, etc. This works both up and down the box but doesn’t seem normal and I can’t work out why it’s happening! I’m on the verge of taking the bike to a mechanic because the bike never used to do this and I feel disconcerted getting constant false neutrals when stationary. Martin
Daft question have you tried it running? Also I'd be checking you put the shifter back in the right position and the rod length is the same as the old rod
Im sure mine does the same and tbh think thats normal. If ever ive messed with mine and tried for gears whilst the bike isnt running and with the back wheel off the floor Ive had to move the back wheel forward slightly between each gear.
