This is a question that's been flummoxing me and I've not found the answer yet. Most commonly seen on trackdays, and most commonly on moderately quick riders. Is it a style thing? Does it keep you warmer (can't really see how, you'd need the cotton layer under your leathers for that...)? Surely it just flaps about and gets annoying? And why a hoodie - you're not going to put the hood over your helmet... So why not a jumper?! So many questions.
I've got an alpinestars eclipse overjacket thing which is brilliant but they are hard to come by now. Not sure on the hoody thing.
As one with answers to almost anything, I venture to suggest it is to elevate one's trackside 'fashion icon' status. As you say (dmc12) there can be no logical reason that would enhance track performance. I'd find it damn annoying too, and much prefer a thin layer of thermals rather than bulky less-effective fleece.
I guess it is another layer to add warmth but the hood flapping in the wind, I don't know how it works out! Having said that if I were (forced!!) to wear one, it would be to put the hood up once I remove the helmet to keep my neck & head warm
I've got 3 specifically for over my leathers. They provide a warm layer over the top for cooler days & then I only have to wear my thin baselayer under the leathers. I hate bulk under the leathers so it stops that feeling. Plus one of mine has 2 zip up pockets which are always a blessing given the lack of them in one pieces. Why a hoodie though....well the jackets came with them anyhow as a lot of biker ones do... and I like the look. Makes it a bit more casual & street You're right though, at speed they nearly strangle you if you're not careful lol
On track? Out here in the independent colonies, the only over suites, jackets or shirts seen and permitted on track are those for rain use, instructor, student or rookie racers. Actual fleece hoodies? Not so much.
poser apart from that yellow thing on the end my son wears one over his leathers 1 to keep warm 2 has his gang name(that's what I call it) on two wheels on the back
