but I can also get one from Italy for £315 delivered.
so the problem is If I get hit with an import tax and if I do
how much tax and extra charges should I expect to pay?

Si is right, no charges will be required with trade from any EU country's. its just places like the USA that you can be hit with charges.

Its the only reason i dont want us to leave the EU

Yep they are right EU no problem maybe a handling charge but that's it...

For all others I use this

New Import Duty & Taxes Calculation | DutyCalculator

Rule of thumb is aprox 3% for bike parts and 20% vat and then shipping and handling charge for US/Japan etc.

    F$*K YOU PAYPAL

just had to get that out of my system.paid for the can and it was slightly dearer than expecting.
so checked it and thought paypal had done their maths wrong.
then I checked the exchange rate they are giving and its 4p off every pound
so I ended up getting charged an extra £15.so I sent them a nice email calling them
scam artists that no only have horrendous charges for services that every other
bank in the world does for free but also decide to mess about with exchange rates
    to pocket extra cash too.

No that's my lesson learned.I won't be using either if I can help it now.
This month alone I have paid 56 quid in eBay fees before PayPal also
    Dipped their hands in.

    got this there now

    Dear Ciaran xxxxxxxxx,

Thank you for contacting PayPal regarding the exchange rate that has been applied to the payment you sent to CF MOTO di Cagnino Francesco with an amount of €387.00.

I understand that you would like to know how PayPal calculated the currency conversion for the said transaction. Allow me to clarify it for you.

Here's how we set our exchange rate:

We receive a wholesale rate quote from our bank twice a day to determine the retail foreign exchange rate to apply to transactions that involve a currency conversion.
Our currency exchange rates are competitive with conversion rates used by banks and by currency exchanges. (Please keep in mind that some of the rates quoted in the newspapers or online are the inter-bank rates that are available only to the largest international banks purchasing currencies in large quantities. A more applicable comparison for consumers is the exchange rates quoted at airports or other consumer currency exchange shops.)

The total cost through PayPal is usually less than many international multi-currency bank transfers.

what bullcr@p they are 4p dearer than the worst exchange rate I could find.
who do they get the quote from....quickquid?? chancers

That's the nature of FX though - money is made on the spread (the difference between the rate you buy currency for and the rate you sell at). Paypal have widened the spread to add a markup and make more money on each FX transaction than it costs them, to cover their costs and whack on a nice little profit. I personally refuse to use Paypal as they are quite opaque in their service and customers have little or no comeback to challenge discrepancies.

Not sure if you could have done so in this case, but if possible try and use an FX card for any non-Sterling transactions. They're free and offer the best FX rates you'll get on the High St. FairFx and CaxtonFX are both good, although I only use Caxton personally.
