I have a problem with my telephone. I can phone out, but when people phone the house the phones don't ring. To the caller, it sounds as if the phoneat my end is ringing. I have done the obvious checks; removed all filters and connected to the master socket, to no avail.
To call an BT engineer costs £129! Any ideas.

How many Phone ya got Plugged in?

Most standard BT Lines have a REN rating of 4 which is basically how many devices U can have plugged in.
If too many are plugged in the symptoms U describe can occur.

Unplug everything and connect just one Phone to the BT Master socket and see if that works, if it does it's an internal problem.
If not then it could also be an external wiring problem/loose connection due to all this rain we've been having

Thanks. Only 2 phones plugged in. The system has always worked well, until last week.

Are they wired or cordless phones? I'd check the connection with a wired phone! Argos sell them cheap and you can take back

If cordless I'd check batteries, any divert setting, do a master reset on them off possible and go from there

Isn't it only chargeable if the fault is because you have moved the master socket or if the problem is with your phone? As said get an old fashioned plug-in phone and see if that fixes it.

If BT really do want to charge you then cancel and go elsewhere ;)

    Right, he's called me back....

He says BT will always try and scare you off with the fixed price engineer visit if it's anything to do with your wiring. He says, insist they do a remote line check from their end.

If it comes back ok, he says remove the faceplate of the BT master box and that should reveal a socket to plug a phone in to.... Try that, apparently it's a 2 part box, and that front part of the master contains the components to make your phones physically ring.

Try that and see how you get on, and hopefully I've translated that right.

Remove the cover on the master socket and plug it directly behind it, into the line into the house, it bypasses everything into house, if it still don't work it's the line in.

Or you just need to turn the volume up
