RR8's onwards had the YTZ7S battery which are smaller and weigh in at ~2086 grams but still a great saving.

Have you got a lithium charger for it? and if so, which one did you go for?

agree with what your thinking but 2.5kg saving this was is much easier

witht eh track fairing and removal of lights etc.. I bet the bike will come in at 15KG + lighter than stick maybe more. with this weight just from the battery and the fairing will make the bike feel it's only lugging a skinny 11 stone chap about ;)

The YTZ10S was the OEM part for RR5-7 but they dropped it down to the YTZ7S for the RR8 onwards (presumably as part of the dieting for the newer model). Did your RRB come with the YTZ10S from new, or is it a replacement?

When I had battery drain problems from having the alarm and tracker installed I looked at the YTZ10S as the 7S is woefully under-powered but it wouldn't have fitted the tray as it has different dimensions to the 7S due to the larger capacity. Although if you're using a 10S with yours then I guess it must fit in there somehow?

Been thinking of going lithium-ion for a while so may pull the trigger on that in Spring, although would require the replacement of my Optimate IV.

I ended up splashing for a lithium trickle charger although I wasn't sure it really needs it.

I'm the first owner and I've not replaced the battery

as for the lithium battery conditioner, if you intend to hook it up when not in use like I do then yet. otherwise just a blast with a non sulperation battery charger is fine

I'm toying with getting one too and i suppose that if your using the bike thru the spring/summer/autumn and then remove the battery over winter, then because of the really slow discharge rate it should be fine for a couple of months and the if in doubt just give it burst on a normal battery charger (non trickle) before putting it back on the bike.

Really interested in this thread, been doing a lot of research. The YTZ10S battery is fitted to 08 onward ABS models and the tray it fits in to is different to non ABS models. YTZ7S battery is fitted to 08 onward non ABS models. I hate the tiny YTZ7S battery's attempt to turn the engine over, sounds like it's almost flat all the time and it's embarrasing.
I too have been looking at getting a replacement Lithium Battery but not sure on the charging system on the bike being compatible of charging this type of battery.
I use Lithium polymer batteries for my radio control aeroplanes and had to buy compatible battery chargers as these batteries can't be charged the same as a nicad, lead acid or gel battery. These types of battery can be very volatile if charged in the wrong manner and I am unsure the conventional charging system on our bikes is suitable for this type of battery. Anyone got anymore info on this?
I doubt you would need to charge the battery over winter as these batteries do not discharge when not used like normal batteries do.

I talked to people have run these batterys on their bikes without a issue and also a maker of a Lithium battery who said on the bike no issue. just careful with using a optimate or similar for a long time with these batterys

That would make sense, although all the parts sites I've used in the past list the 7S for the ABS models as well.

    Amen to that!

That's what's been stopping me from getting one so far. Heard so many conflicting reports about how and when they should be charged. Obviously they're designed for track and race bikes so not sure how well they'd suit everyday riding?

Do you mean 'long time' as in leaving them on charge overnight, or the number of times you use it?

I would imagine you wouldn't need to use a charger on them very often at all though, but coming from a scenario of having to have 2 x YTZ7S's with a charged one in reserve will mean a mindshift to not having to use a charger much/at all. Sod it, I'll get one ordered!

btw, where did you get yours from?

The ones on the market now, which we are buying, are designed for bikes, so no problem with the charging system.

P.S. I think part of the perceived issue with the standard battery is actually the starter motor, which sounds weak (different to other bikes) as it was re-geared to suit the small battery.

Got mine from the NEC show so no idea off the top of my head the name of the trader

with the optimate they do deep sulphuric charging/discharging I think it's called which is not good for the lithium batterys. So you can either give it a 10 min regular charge once a month with a standard charger or use the lithium optimate
