My mates say never bike a track bike always buy a standard one and convert it as a track bike usually has a ragged engine. One of the group has bought a few and found problems with each once on track and now steers clear of them.

Have a look at these forums: trackdayriders and motoforum. When buying, have a look at what race bodywork is available. Don't buy the Chinese fairings from ebay, but go for race units. A complete set unpainted is about £200. Have a look at UK Race Support's website. It is also worth looking at a second set of wheels for putting wets onto. Buying a track bike can be fine, just make sure it has had things like oil and filter changed every meeting. Converting across can be pricey, you will need a whole heap of spares so you are going to have to budget for these also.

£2500 will get you something decent enough for sure. I paid £2600 for my 06 R6 race bike and it has been superb (apart from me binning at Oulton Park's race on Saturday). I would personally avoid Suzuki and stick to a ZX6, CBR6 or R6 . The pre injection R6's go well (up to 2005). Get something that you can get spares for easily. The race/trackday forums are superb (the 2 I mentioned earlier) and you can get some real bargain bits. Ebay is not bad either and there are some good buys on there. The other thing that is worth looking at in the long run is tyre warmers, having used them I don't know how I could now ride without. But they can be got at a later date. A good solid and sound bike is the most important thing.

TDR or motoforum is the place to look for it am sure you gonna find something decent in that budget.

Robinh73 - why he should to avoid gsxrs ?

If you have a track close to you have a look down there i was at oulton park yesterday and there were a few up for sale.

I agree with Navvy10 though i would buy or use your road bike and convert to a track bike as at least that way you know its not been hammered like a track bike. You also get the satisfaction of saving and doing it yourself.

I am going to turn my 09 blade in to a track bike and probably get another bike for the road ,i will see how much road riding i do this year to decide on that though plus see what the great uk weather is like again, with the job i do most weekends i am busy yet i have more spare time midweek meaning i can do more track days than weekend ride outs so track is the future for me.

Im quite happy with my blade being my road bike its just too nice to risk on track, I want a bike I can ride closer to the limit and throwing £9K into a barrier is too much for my feeble mind to deal with

I used to have the track and road bike but I always wanted to take the latest one on track . So I sold the track bike and from my gsxr1000 to my rr6 now my 2012 blade . I don't really like road riding it killed me to go the 600 mile run in ha ha . I do a tour every year and the TT that's the only time the fairings will come out the loft . If I fancy a blast it's "oh shit sorry the plate dropped off" lol ImageUploadedByTapatalk1367428431.466162.jpg

If you thinking about buying a road bike and converting it by puting race farings on thats ok but if you thinking about suspension upgrade and other bits and bobs that is not the way to go. It will work out cheaper to buy track prepped bike.

Yeah you got it sorted there then wedge. I know it's something I wanna get into regularly but can't risk the blade cos I go for ride's out with my dad most weekends and do a scotland tour as well as a europe tour every year as well. Probs gonna get a sportbike for 2-3K lob some unpainted fairings on it and rag the arse off the b*stard!! Love it mate. I wanna go faster!!!!!

I can see where you are coming from lex but I have only just popped my track day cherry yesterday!! For now I'd be happy with a decent condition road sports bike with sport tyres and a nice fruity exhaust and power commander. The suspension and brake upgrades may come later depending on my pace around track.

My Suzuki k5 750 is great on track, goes like stink and good supply of parts as almost all same as 600.

K6 750's hold their value still but about 2k will get you k5 track bike, nearer £3k for q road one

Maybe I am being too harsh on gsxrs. It is just that the engines can be more fragile if fettled than Yam, Honda or Kawasaki. Most 600 grids now comprise of R6 or ZX6R with Daytona 675s if you can afford to refresh your motor 3 times a season. gsxrs are great if you buy a road bike, but I personally would avoid a track prepared one if it has anything but a standard motor.
