My insurance id due in a couple of weeks so lets see what my current company is offering?

If I put the bike down with no mods its £195 however if I click on crash bungs only its then £564. If I take off the crash bungs and put down a seat cowl as the only mod its again £564. So I return it to no mods and its back to £195

WTF is going on out there?

That's totally stupid being the crash bungs would actually save them money in a light off!

With a 200% increase in my premium for just applying a tank pad make a mockery of MCE's responce to my email earlier in the year. Perhaps its a good time to write to the Bike mag to see if they want to publish a story to this regard?

I have emailed MCE and await their responce.

Don't put anything down, If you have an off the insurance company won't come and have alook at the bike for a while anyway, so take everything off and put on everything else. My bike has far too many add ons to list!

C Nash didn’t seem that bothered by my mods when I insured with them last year, they only seemed interested in performance enhancing parts which mine are not. Having said that I am paying through the nose anyway. After an extended break from motorcycles my old no claims discount could not be used and I am already paying just over £500.

    I just had a thought.

What if you were to trick your bike out with scuff protectors, bobbins, case covers etc. Then sent the bill to the insurance company with a note explaining that this was the cost out of your own pocket for protecting their investment...

MCN had a campaign just before Xmas about this very subject, with Carole Nash being one (the only one?) that came out and clarified that things like crash bungs and tank protectors won't count as mods.

They're also doing the Smartwater-type marking on bikes for free for new policies as well, following another MCN campaign. Let's hope the other ins companies follow suit on both scores.

Thats interesting Moily because I completed an online quote with Carol Nash and the price came in at £295 F/C Leagal cover and europe cover, they followed up with a phone call and I asked them about mods, they said if it doesn't enhance the manufacturers power or compromise the safety features it will not increase the premium. So crash bungs, seat cowl, tank pads and tail tidies do not increase the cost?

Aye, that's what I'm saying - CN came out and specifically said those won't count as mods. Think it was Bennetts or MCE that MCN originally highlighted as being stupid in saying a tank pad counted as a mod.

I was told by an insurance guy when I renewed last year to declare no mods when renewing on the web. Once you have the policy after a week or so ring the company and tell them about the mods. He said the web systems were not really setup to accept sensible mods like crash bungs etc. I think its all to do with talking to computers or human beings - computer says NO!

I'll put it to the test next month as my renewal is due.

Im 22 with 4 years NCB and im paying £300 tpft with £500 excess, i have to suggest using the bike insurer to get quotes as they seem to be able to offer better quotes then other search engines, im with H&R insurance as they are the only company that quoted me less than £1000
