I have just renewed my insurance with MCE and received a text saying if the steering lock is not on when the bike is stolen mce will not pay out. It also says it states this is in the policy ( who reads this ) So be warned put your locks on, I have had to look in the manual to find if it had one and it says it does, I am going to remove all the covers and put it on now
Yes.. my MCE policy has the same. So if I leave the bike (17MY Blade) on paddock stands in the garage, I have to turn the bars to the left and lock it.
I guess if they recover it and find the steering lock is NOT broken, and they took it without the keys. If you never get the bike back, then yes they would not know.
Hope that’s not a general requirement by all insurers (I’m with AXA through BeMoto) - i only have a narrow space to put it in so my bike needs to be in the front wheel chock type stand. Mind you they’d have to get it unchained from the ground anchor - if they can do that then the steering lock is somewhat irrelevant.
If its recovered and the sterring lock hasn't been broken off they will come back to you and want any settlement repaid to them. Once they pay out ownership transfers to them so any recovery would go straight back to them and cut you out completely.
Interesting. Every time I go to my dealer for a service they ask for the steering lock to be left off, so that the guys can move things around when it gets busy. I hope they aren't insured with MCE.
After ticking yes to MCE breakdown cover during my on line insurance I did actually bother to read what I was actually going to be covered for. Basically not very much at all. I then contacted my old breakdown provider (RAC) and decided that their cover was far superior to this new policy add on from MCE. No point in paying for both, so I contacted MCE and tried to cancel the cover and thus reduce or so I thought, my monthly payments. They explained to me that I couldn’t remove it and it was offered as part of their policy free of charge. I queried why there was a tick box for breakdown and so the back and forth argument continued. Waste of a phone call really. I got nowhere with them but at least I’m now confident I have the cover I need all be it with another provider. Check your cover !
I was with MCE last year and I was completely unimpressed with the renewal procedure so left and went elsewhere. Basically they dont send you a renewal notice unless you opt in to the auto renewal feature (which I hate) Your told your policy is ending and that's it. No confirmation of NCD until after the policy has fully lapsed, no quotation for a new policy. Nothing. I spent ages on phone to find out my ncd years as with 4 vehicles I couldn't remember and I couldn't get a new quote with out it. If you want a premium from them you have to do a whole new quote including all the name, address crap even though your an existing customer. Pretty poor process from start to finish. Had to chase 3 times for confirmation of my ncd which they eventually emailed to me
Likewise and totally agree. If there's one thing that would get me posting again it's an insurance thread, and especially one that is critical of MCE. I'm still fuming over a £15 admin fee for a number plate change. I ended up figuring the acronym could mean Motor Cycle Extortionists!!
The bottom line is it was by far the cheapest quote, I have ground anchors and multiple alarm systems house, garage, bike, and for me in reality it is no effort to put it on and did not realise the bike had one. When I was a lad they just forced the lock and fcuked your bike
They still do ! But now you have to cover your back just in case its recovered and an assesor spots the lock fully intact
This thread just reminded me to renew. I just went with MCE again, they are by far the best quote I got and cover all my modifications. Just make sure you answer all the questions correctly and read all the small print and the terms and conditions as they will charge for any amendments. At the end of the day you only get what you pay for.
I struggle to read the instructions on a tin of beans, What chance do we have to keep up with the changing small print on the insurance
Bennets beat MCE for this year thankfully as I can't stand MCE. But just changing my blade for another one exactly the same model etc they charged me a £32 admin fee for changing bikes. They take the p1ss with admin fees. Bearing in mind my policy is only £128 that's a 25% charge
I'm with MCE now, its the only way I could insure my 17 Blade with 1 years NCB. I don't like them at all, and god forbid if I need to claim. The whole process with them has been a nightmare, and the foreign call centres (I think they are in the US) really are difficult and scripted. I just moved house, and they nearly doubled my premium!! Original price was £457, and they wanted £423 extra! Even though its in an alarmed garage now and far safer. Waiting a year and switching.. to BeMoto, Bennetts or Bikesure.
I never knew/had forgotten my bike had a steering lock. Thought that was a bit of an old fashioned accessory that bikes used to have before HISS/Alarms, etc. My garage is integral and I have two Rottweilers, one of which does have a habit of going to sleep in the garage, for some reason. Wonder if I could claim that as mitigation for not having the steering lock on?
