Hey guys saw from MCN a link about changing bikes with a pic of the 2013 Repsol so had a look and noticed this statement-

Keep Britain Biking | Blog | Thoughts on New Metal

"First, my colleague has just ordered himself a new bike – a shiny 2013 CBR000RR Fireblade – after getting pissed off with the unbelievably poor build quality of his BMW S1000RR HP4. Less than a year old, on a 62 plate, the bike is starting to rot underneath. Sure, it’s done 4000 miles over the winter, but you’d expect a £15k bike to last a little longer. Great to ride, but BMW weren’t surprised at all when he took it back to complain and so he has reverted to his first love, and will soon (three thirty today, to be exact!) be the owner of a Repsol replica ‘Blade:"

Well known problem, mate in Scotland ran a mk2 bike though winter, at 9 months old BMW made him pay to replaced the rotten and leaking sump, saying "you used it in winter, no warranty"

Another mate checked his mk2 at 300 mile old and had similar problem - got it replaced under warranty.

First mate then went radio rental at BMW and got his money back after he had spent over £300 I think on the works.

Think it's just a batch of sumps on first mk2 bikes which missed a process / finish / manufacturing error.

Can they refuse a warranty if you ride through winter?

I think they would struggle to weasel out of it if trading standards got involved...it's not like they advertise bikes "for summer use only" !!

They did refuse the warranty stating winter road conditions and poor maintenance by owner to remove salt etc.

There was an amusing Facebook comment late spring when BMW UK posted 'come and ride our new range of bikes' - owner said 'can you use them all year unlike the S1000r which rusted away and you made pay for a new sump at 9 months old?'

Think I put a screen shot on here somewhere of the posts

    yea?

if you look hard enough you'll find reported issues with all bikes....

    aprilla...

    1) New engine - recall
    2) Valve cover leak - three times (twice after they replaced gaskets with "new" design)
    3) Gas tank bubbling
    4) Fuel Tank Breather – recall
    5) Windshield bubbling up (the lower black portion)
    6) Hot start or cold start severe chattering/tappeting
    7) Headlight case melted
    8) Put the clutch in and the engine dies
    9) Dead throttle (really fun when you pull out into traffic and wham no throttle response - none)
    10) Front brake shudder

and whatever you do,dont do a search regarding blade gearboxes.:D (replaced 2 in my bike!!!)

a friend used to race one but after his third gearbox
failure he got rid of it.he was saying a lot of racers are
having bad launch problems with the new ones and some
clutch problems to.I wouldnt have one for the main fact that
our bmw dealer here is rubbish, my fathers r1200s spent more
time in the workshop than on the road and they still didnt
get it fixed.used to run like crap in traffic, overheat, gearbox
problems, and random dash warning lights.

Your colleague ran a HP4 in winter for 4000 miles!! The blokes a lunatic. Call me a pussy but I clean my bike after every ride and don't use it in the wet/bad weather. If I was gonna run a bike over winter it'd be a shitter.

Think any bike new or not used in a uk winter wud start to rust up n fall to bits esp 1 that wasnt washed down n cleaned after every ride no matter how few miles done, so we cant start saying the s1000rr is crap cus of that or shud be avoided, its a bit of tlc needed on our pride n joys, surely not much to ask, esp when we recieve all the fun??

I agree dude dont get me wrong, its scandulous bikes rust up after 1 winter but the same manufacturers can build cars that can last through many winters with hardly any looking after!!

But what can we honestly do, stop buying bikes?? Dont change the, for new ones as much?? I dunno wot is the answer apart from mpbeung meticulous in ur cleanng regime, i know it takes me 5 hrs to clean n polish me bike after a blast in dry sunny conditions, longer in winter for sure.

Some parts always suffer a bit in winter, but I have yet to have any Honda in the last 20 years fall apart on me and they are ridden in all conditions except standing snow, and I hate washing bikes, so they don't get tlc form me, in fact mines got a service tomorrow and I landed back from a 2 week work trip today and it looks a real mess bit was too tired to even think of cleaning it, feel for the poor fecker who is working on it tomorrow.

Thing is I know people with rr4's and 5's who ride all year and just wash and polish the plastics and have done 25k+ and don't have this issue but all that money on a new bike and its feked in 4k and 1 winter.

It just shows its not all bikes it's new bikes, prices seem to go up but quality down!

Having spent a fair bit of time riding my 2010 ZX10R Tracker I'm starting to really appreciate the Kwaks brakes, power and handling.

Might just chop in the Blade just before it's 2 years old for the 2015 ZX10R if nothing else floats me boat in the mean time over my current fave the RSV4 Prilia.

BMW hmmmmmm, , I've enjoyed reading this thread but it won't stop me getting one ,
A few bikes gone rusty underneath , I'd rather have that than have a blade with shit ABS
That don't work properly , or clocks that melt from the sun , or a fairing that's a nightmare to
take off , there's problems with every bike out there and we all know it too.
