We're going to take in Millau and its environs on our Euro road trip this month, and wondered if anyone had any tips for the area? Is it worth riding over the viaduct and then doubling back and doing the town and the great roads on the valley floor?

    Millau, France - Google Maps

We'll be approaching from the NW and heading out SE over to Cannes after.

Yep, done it that way a couple of times, fantastic roads and great little villages to stop at in the area

So the best way is to go south on the autoroute over the viaduct, get off at the next junction (the airport?) and had back up into Millau itself and then head out east?

    ETA: ah, I see there's a junction before the airport (46 - it's a sign!)

The viaduct is gleaming. Must do it.

There's a visitor centre on the north end which is worth a visit.

Definately worth doing, there's a couple of viewing areas in the hills that give a great view of the bridge, think you'll find the access to those from the road that goes under the bridge.
If you're going to stay in the area the Town of Millau is good. This hotel is good Cevenol Hotel
We did some Kayaking on the Tarn, the guys in the hotel arranged that for us, all we needed to do was get to the Kayak company the next day.
Nice area to spend some time riding too

There a visitor centre underneath the bridge and it looks fantastic from below, better than from riding across IMO. Just go under and over....

Cheers, will deffo check out the visitors' centre. Keen to get some good pics of it so will explore around the valley floor.

We're staying in Rodez the night before so will be heading out east and onto Cannes for the following night. Got everything crossed for some beautiful riding weather!

You will have to re-create that!

Gives you some ideas of how it looks 'underneath' and going over it

Nice work! Looks fantastic, really hope the weather's that good in a couple of weeks.

PS. You should have had your knee down on those roadside ride-pasts..! ;)

The roads under the bridge are covered in grit and gravel that rains down from the road deck.

Plus I can't get my knee down....

Lots of good roads in that area, a75 up towards Clermont Ferand one of the best motorway routes through France. Near Cannes is the N85, also known as the Napolean route, worth a go, best during the week rather than weekend though.
