Bear with me, but we are going to Como in May next year, via calais to Nurburg for a night, then Nurburg to Baden Baden for a night, then onto Lucerne for a night, then como for 2 nights. A decent run, with some short Journeys. easy peasy, and we take it easy, all avoiding the motorways and tolls with fab roads on the way. On the way back, we where going to get the Autozug (train) from Allessandria to Germany, but they have changed their schedule, so we can't do that. What we need is recommendations for a half way stop off in-between Como and Zeebrugge ( we have booked a ferry on the Sat night to Hull). We are leaving Como on the Thursday to get to Zeebrugge on the sat for the ferry, that is 600 miles (ish), easy doable. Anyone know of a decent stop off that contains good roads and scenery at the half way point? We want to avoid motorways and tolls all the way??? I've looked at Vosges national park, has anyone been there? Cheers!
try this as an idea - needs Swiss motorway pass... Como, Province of Como, Italy to Zeebrugge, Brugge, Belgium - Google Maps Overnight in Baden Baden or Karlsruhe ? There is a cracking road from there towards Trier - that link is not right but gives an idea
Yup, looked at that Al, already staying in the black forest on the way down, but i suppose doing it twice isn't that bad at all!
Hi Si, you could head west across to the Col du Grand-Saint-Bernard, Bourg-Saint-Pierre, the roads in this area are amazing, Geneva, then north and home.
Recommend Hotel Gruner Baum in Buhlertahl, restaurant is great and rooms are well up to standard, right on the edge of the forest and not far off the autobahn if required, when working in Strasbourg we used to drive across the Rhine and stay there.....Mike Hotel-Restaurant Grner Baum - Startseite
If you fancy going east France the way back you could stop of in Ligny en Barrois about 40 miles east of Nancy and not very far from the German border. Great little town with super bars and restaurants, alternatively head back the way you came and stop of in either Heidelberg or better still the old roman town of Ladenburg if you fancy some real oldy worldy culture. I have been to all 3 many times and they are all really nice places. If any of the above are of interest let me know and I will get you name of some hotels.
