I have just become aware of this one. Not saying it is a bad thing, just that as with the lever guards not many people may not know about it until they turn up on the day (I only do a few road bike only track days) https://bike.msvtrackdays.com/FAQ/Booked under rider requirements
I have always worn a full length back protector on track and road, just in case. Might get an airbag suit next too
It's coming to all UK tracks not just MSV. Had an email from "No Limits" few weeks back and now you need a full licence at all track, ACU you one on its own isn't enough, you'd have to have some kind of road licence (Restricted A1 or Full) with it. Its to do with the circuits getting insurance to run track day events. One thing I would say is I ride with an Alpinestars Airbag in my suit but during the warmer track days I get bloody hot on track but value the protection.
Good to read this, not the ribs obviously! I just picked one of those up half price on FB & it looks like new, glad to hear it’ll do the job. Fingers crossed I don’t have to find out how well they work
Looks like it is new leathers for me. Popped along to J&S with the current leathers to try on a back protector. Current leathers are a little too snug to zip up once a back protector has been put in. Was looking at the Dainese D-Air Smart Jacket as an over the top of my leathers solution, as it is cheaper than new leathers and a back protector. Checking with MSV, they were non-commital saying they were uncertain about the smart jacket as in Dainese's own instructions it says it is not for motorsports or track use. So it is time to bite the bullet and get new leathers. I also notice on No Limits web page for clothing they say, a back protector is a good idea and you can hire them from No Limits. They may need to update their web site to say that it is more than a good idea for 2022. I will be watching their social media feeds as the new season kicks off to see if guidance on what is acceptable as a full length back protector becomes more clear.
Any further news or experience on back protectors for 2022? I thought all suits and jackets came with back armour (my first suit about twenty years ago did and all my jackets have too) so maybe I’m missing something…
This is a recent post from "No Limits trackdays": All riders taking part in a No Limits trackday now must use a recognised form of back protector which is designed exclusively for that purpose. The bare minimum standard for back protector are : CE Approved neoprene foam pads, found usually as factory fitted to most motorcycle leathers but please check. However we highly recommend the use of a full length type such as Forcefield which offers far more skeletal protection from neck to coccyx. We have limited stock of Forcefield available at track plus we sell them on the website too however ultimately, the choice is yours on type and what make you use, just as long as you use one! Riders wearing Air bag suits or air bag vests are excluded from wearing a physical back protector.
Was about to splash out £650 for a Helite GP air bag vest as my Dianese 2 piece did not come with any back protection. The skelatal protection ones mentioned above, that would not fit under my 'snug' leathers, were coming in at £100-150. As £650 is such an investment for my 4-5 'road bike only' track days a year I wanted to try on the Helite in the shop. Got to say it was very comfy when it was on. A little heavy to lug around when not being worn. However whilst I was in the shop I found a Rev'It neoprene foam pad CE level 2 for £40 that just about fits in my leathers. Meets the minimum standard and is cost effective for what I am doing.
Just remember that your 2 piece leathers have to zip all the way around your waist if you are using them on trackdays, 360 degrees zip.
