Hi Guys, I'm planning to visit Northern Italy this summer. First day I'm planning a stop at Amsterdam, the next one an 'autoslaaptrein' to Livorno.... and here is the bit where I need some advice. I would like to spend 2-3 days in Northern Italy/Dolomites. Which road should I take, which places to visit (Pisa, Verona, Lake Garda,...?), which motorbike-friendly hotels would you recommend? The next 2-3 days will be spent in Austria. I have some ideas which passes to take, but any recommendations are highly welcome ') Thank you and regards! Peter
The Grossglockner is awesome... def worth doing Austrian side, I done the Dolomites from Bologna but cant remember the route, awesome scenery, the odd ducati to play with but hit and miss roads..... Si has done a lot of northern Italy so will point you in the right direction.
Are you riding back from Livorno?? To Holland? If so, you are in Tuscany, so take a trip to Pisa. Then, go onto Verona. Garda is lovely, but Como is waaay better. The road around there is stunning, twisties for 30 miles but narrow. Then, take the road out towards switzerland, do a pass or 2 and hit Germany...theres roads there that have fantastic shell grip and are like a race track! We've done Austria too, the mountain roads are awesome, pure speed and great twisties as Jimbo said.Scenery is awesome, but you'll be concentrating ragging the fook out of it lol. Not a lot of Police either..... Verona is fantastic, great food and great wine and plenty to see. Como is stunning, and the Hotels are fabulous and if you book now, are cheap. Verona is great, one of my favourite places. We've done a few passes now, all have been great apart from the Stevio (great views but the surface is not so good and hairpins everywhere so you can't really get a move on) You can go from Northern italy and hit Austria straight away, and can take in a few passes while doing so...all fantastic fun, but the Stelvio is crap road wise...there's loads better, the roads between the mountains are marvellous. As for Hotels, i can point you in a direction etc.... if you decide which way your going. We do 10 days and find that's just enough time. Have a look here: 2012: http://1000rr.co.uk/index.php?threads/back-from-our-trip.5041/#post-83109 This included Austria through the mountains. We did mainly Germany in 2013, but can't find the thread..... 2014: http://1000rr.co.uk/index.php?threads/italy-2014-review-and-pics.18808/#post-287447 Verona, como, Garda, Germany etc... A few pointers on those trips.
Arabba in the Domomites is ace little town, There is a great hotel with underground garage with supplies like chain lube and basic tools plus a hose to wash your bike. I would def base yourself there for at least 2 nights - there is a lot of WW1 history in the area so you can visit the trenches up in the mountains via cable car for a few non-bike hours. Also moving each day can be tedious and the roads are fantastic. Its an area I have been to / through 3 times on a bike and always far too short a time, I'd love to spent some decent time there. Austria is very biker friendly and you'll likely be made welcome at most places though like everywhere else watch for cops. They're nothing like as in your face as Switzerland but nonetheless with all these awesome roads it's easy to forget about them. Me and the wife were lucky enough to get away for 2 months on the FJR1300 in 2012, here's a couple of random photos from Austria.
Thank you Guys!! I've been away for the weekend, so I couldn't reply earlier. Very useful. I'm starting to plan my trip ')
