Bike – 2004 CBR1000rr – 15500 miles My reliable blade decided to be unreliable on the worst possible day! Ok, so my Blade decided to die on me on the worst possible day. A friend of mine died a week and a bit ago when someone pulled across the road in front of him on his R1. So in tribute 55 of the bikers he knew gathered to ride to his ceremony including me. On the way to the meeting point my clocks died, on trying to start my bike once stopped I got nothing. Once bump started it lasted for a few hundred yards then it totally died. Fortunately I managed to grab a lift to the funeral from one of the guy’s girlfriends so I made the service. After the ceremony, burial and gathering I returned to my bike and my uncle brought over the battery from my old R6 and my brothers bike. We tried the R6 battery however we knew this to be flat but charged it a little on the jump leads then hopped the bike charging system would take over once running. The bike lasted about a mile then died again. We put my brothers fully charged battery in and it got me home. Our thoughts are that there is something wrong with the internal charging system of the bike. I know that there is a common fault on this model with the alternator / stator if I’m correct? We think that because the bike kept dying once it had used the power from the battery but once it had a fully charged battery in it lasted to get me home. Anyway, hopefully some of the technical / clever people on here could share some thoughts on this one. If anyone has had a similar issue it would be good to know how it was resolved. Anyway, any help on this one would be appreciated. Cheers in advance. Danny
Hi. Sorry to hear your news. I had an 05 and had the same issues. Took it to my local Honda dealer who said it was the alternator. I had the part replaced free of charge and contributed I think it was £30 towards labour. My bike was 6 year old and out of warranty so thought this was a really good deal.
It's a common problem on 04/05 models. Honda won't recognise the problem over here for some reason but in the States they're replaced for free. Cost me £250 to get mine done!
Cheers Marion, typical case of someone lost far too early. That sounds like you got a good deal on the repair Marion, I don’t think I will be that lucky as I bought the bike private…can only try going down the “this is a known problem route” however I think I will get told to jog on haha and rightly so I guess. £250 quid is a hit! I will try source the parts myself and do the work to the bike once I remove and inspect the parts. Hopefully it was the labour that cost and not the parts..
take the stator cover off anf have a look at the windings, they will look burnt if this is the issue, but I'd start at the beginning.it's either as stated, the stator,or the rectifier put a fresh battery on the bike, start and check the voltage,on tickover should read high 13-14v,if it's only around 12,and dropping then it's not getting any charge, check all connections going into rectifier, and to battery.once happy they areall ok,it's oly really one of those 2 things.burnt windings are a good indication of it being knackered
sorry to hear that as honda replaced for 8 years from first reg, for free all around the world by the way yes is the alternator , u can buy an oem one or i will suggest you to rewire your (not buy a china crap in ebay , as they don last long)
Had the same problem on RR5, turned out to be the Reg/Rec which is a weak point. I replaced it with one from a Yamaha R1, not straight forward, bit of soldering required but the Yamaha part is more robust and have had no problems since.
