Ok, its a bit chilly, but local authority have decided to start gritting the roads (+6c) so, going to lay the bike up now for a few months.
It does need an oil change, should I do it now ? or leave until I start riding again in March?

    I'd say leave till March.

An engine left idle for months will accumulate a certain amount of condensation etc internally so a fresh change just before a seasons use makes more sense to me!

.............................however if Arthur says otherwise, I'm wiv im! :D

Yeah leave it till spring. Nice fresh oil all is always best and not stuff that has been slowly sucking in moisture.
I always do mine in spring anyway. Gives me something to look forward too lol

lol, Ha! Well I do them now as then all harmful and corrosive contaminants that have accumulated in the engine from running are removed and the engine sits in storage with clean fresh oil, avoid starting the bike if poss through the storage period and that will prevent condensation, you could wind it over from time to time but hard with a modern engine to wind it and not fire it up (however Hondas wind with the kill switch off ;) ), that would move some oil round the gearbox and top end but no need IMO with short term storage. Place the batt on trickle and pray for a short winter!

You go with that SW my man....lol

    :)

I would have said change it in spring, but Arthur makes a very good point there.

Also would you use that little bit left over in the oil container from the last oil change, you know that little bit you say to yourself " i'll use this for topping up" or do you open a fresh can and chuck the part used?

I'd use the bit left over. It doesn't go off, at least not in the time scales we're talking about.

Maybe be right, or maybe wrong, but for you boys who treat yer bikes like they are your last lay on this planet, that don't seem like the best idea to me.

You ain't gonna get all that shitty Aldi oil out of the engine when you drain it, so it ends up contaminating your expensive fully synth liquid gold.

just my tuppence worth on the subject

And surely if the old oil will suck in the condensation as aforementioned wont the new oil do that to??

Thats why I leave my old stuff in and change it in spring. To be honest it probably doesn't matter that much as long as your old oil hasn't been used to hell and turned into piss. If you ride that much then you should change it more than once a year anyway.
I'd be looking to change at 2-3k anyway and always change at the beginning of the riding year
