I am wanting to get an on board camera, what do you guys have and how have you mounted them to get the best videos
Go Pro HD are amazing, great quality but i'm still playing about find the best place to mount. I always am in a rush and don't have time to try different areas on the bike but will make more of a effort this year Go Pro HD 2 is out now I think
I have only mucked around with mine on my crosser mounted to my goggle strap and on the road on an arm band around my upper arm as when it was mounted to the bike it was blurry as hell and violent because it wasnt secured on the right place Oh and I have a contour 1080p hd camera with a waterproof case. If anyone has one of these and has the waterproof cover, buy the surf board mount instead of the helmet mount if you are mounting it to your helmet as the mount fits the case better.
Gopro is the best I've seen mate, but looking 300+ with all the bits, but proper quality gear, and the new one is out soon which will no doubt be better! I have a bullet 720hd Which is about 80 quid, really easy mounts etc and decent quality in terms of video but sound is pants! http://www.dogcamsport.co.uk/dogcam-bullet-hd-camera.html
If I was buying one now I'd look in to getting the contour rome, theres an app for the iPhone that you can use that for the screen. It looks the mutts nuts. The mounting systems are very clever for these but I'm assuming they are all the same
Depends how much you want to pay mate and whether you prefer it bike mounted or helmet mounted. If I were going bike mounted then I think the GoPro hd2 is the one to go for, but not in my opinion if you prefer helmet mounted, then a bullet-cam is the way to go. I've been using bullet cams for around 10 years now, and having tried both options, bike mounted against helmet mounted, I've ended up with helmet mounted as my preference, particularly for touring. If you decide to go helmet mounted take a look at Dogcam's mini dvr hd, excellent bit of kit, compact and good quality footage. I'll find a link and post it up for you. The guys at Dogcam are very helpful and will answer any questions you have, they also sell the GoPro. JD
Just read Jimbo's post so you have the Dogcam link, just look for the mini dvr hd, about £250. I'm about to buy a new cam, but it's more expensive, and the only reason I'm going for it is it has a 'loop' facility, and it's the only cam on the market to have one. It's the POV VIO HD, again sold by Dogcam. Good luck with it all mate, plenty of people on here who will be happy to give you advice, me included. JD
Thanks JD, Im undecided on bike or helmet, I prefer the idea of bike but struggle to see where it could be mounted to get a good viewpoint without vibration etc.
i have the drift x170 hd camera .it has a screen on it so you can see what you are recording ,and has a fool proof remote control that you put on like a watch,so you dont have to keep removing your helmet to see if the camera is on. i used to have gopro hd but sold it very soon after buying it as it was very fiddly to set it on the correct setting ,also you have no idea where the camera is pointing until you get home and put it on a computer, several days of recording were just nice views of the sky or the front mudguard. the button to record is very hard to work with your fingers ,and impossible when wearing gloves, oh and the mountings cost a packet and are not very adjustable.
This is mine - http://sport-cam.co.uk/products.asp?cat=101 I mount mine on the side of the fairing using the suction cups. Mine is only 720p but the audio is very good. have a look at this short clip.... The bends - YouTube
The Dogcam mini dvr hd has the screen and is simple to set up, and a remote is available for it, not had any experience of the drift so another one to look at I guess. Worth checking out the reviews of all of them on YouTube to make comparisons. Bear in mind also the field of view of some of these cameras, having a really wide angle lens is fine for things like skiing, but not for biking, it makes your mates bikes look miles away, essentially a fish-eye effect, not good, trust me. JD
Cant say i recognise my gopro from r1monkeys description. The suction cup fitting and numerous mounts come with the camera and are a doddle to set up. The buttons are fine for me. I just hit the button and forget abouf it, big memeory card and edit the crap out when i get home. The quality is superb, its waterproof to 60m and the size of a box of matches. Superb, plus now the gopro 2 is out the original ones are cheap as chips
My mate has a drift, we are going out on the crossers this week with one each side of the lid to compare, I'll post up vids if I figure out how
^ My prediction is the current Drift HD is better than the old Go Pro, but the NEW Go Pro is amazing. However its £200 more and a little bit of a fiddle to mount - Oh, and you look like Johnny 5 if you try and stick it on your helmet!
