Driving home in my car doing just over 30 mph and I do mean just, I come across a speed camera van! Now given the fact that I may or may not be in the dock over this I start to have a look at the signs that are supposed to be displayed when they are using a mobile unit....... So does anyone know the distance that they have to display a mobile camera unit sign? There is one on the road but it is three quarters of a mile to a mile along the road(I will measure it Tmr). Just incase you understand! I was doing under 35 mph but Deffo over 30 mph.
Sorry if this has been asked and I missed it.

    Thanks in advance

Just reading a few things about speeding on another thread and said you will not get pulled for under under 35MPH. I know people may say different but this was via BIB who pots on another forum I use

Pepipoo for all things speeding related. Don't put any identifying information on posts about it as CPS have been known to trawl sites for incriminating info.

Personally if I had 35MPH indicated I wouldn't be too concerned as I know in real life that puts my cage at 32MPH which is inside the ACPO 10% + 1mph range.

EDIT - Make that 10% + 2. Having a read around the ACPO website it does tend to indicate you are ok up to 10% +2, then probably a bad boy course up to 10% +9, and summons above that. Also say that this applies for all limits EXCEPT 20MPH zones. Document here.

The above is correct as far as i understand. What i DON'T understand is when enforcement becomes entrapment. AFAIK, when the BIB are 'educating' us poor souls, standing about with hairdryers, they are supposed to be highly visible otherwise it's entrapment. So what is it when there's a plain clothes van parked up with a letter box cut out the back?

Thanks for your replies, this guy was parked on a left hand bend and was certainly not visible from a distance! I would even say it was as little as 100 mtr!!!! As I stated previously I am going to check all the distances out!

    100m eh?

You want more than that in a 30mph zone?

The Highway code stopping distance is 91.4m at 50 mph so being as this was a 30 zone I fail to see why you're whining like a child about this?

Try obeying the local limits and focus your attention on not killing a Child rather than getting out of a Speeding offence.

Whilst I am guilty of being one the first to steam in when I really don’t agree to a point of view…. Come on boys play nicely. There are two sides to every story, and both are deserving of a fair hearing.

To be honest I think hidden cameras can create accidents because when people suddenly notice them they tend to slam on the brakes, ending up being rear ended or mounting the pavement or diving straight on a corner. But at the same time I think that the law where a camera has to be marked and visible is also a bit daft as you are just warning people to slow down at certain points then carry on at stupid mph.

I'm not claiming I'm a saint just that I can see both sides

    50mph stopping distance is 53m actually, 23m at 30mph and 96m at 70mph.
These stopping distances are very old, worked out at the end of the 60's and I'm sure that a modern car/bike can stop even shorter?
If you think it takes your bike over 91m to stop at 50mph, best get your brakes looked at ;)

You're quite correct Simon, bar the 70 mph one which seems to be 75m not 96!
Serves me right for using the first Google search I came across!

Good thing is these lower distances strengthen my argument further!

Using the Highway code table below it seems that even if the OP was doing 70 mph in that 30 mph Zone he could stop in 'allegedly' in 75m yet his complaint is the 'under-hand' Copper placed his signage for said Speed Trap at the very least 100m from his vantage point!

How very un-sporting, I must say!

70mph is 96m overall stopping mate, look again at your list
their sign might be at 100m, but they can read your speed much much further away than that with their Lasers

I think the warning is best. Assuming they put the cameras in actual black spots... After all, a deterrent isn't really working if you don't find out for a week afterwards... That's just revenge.

Actually they were on the chelsea embankment last night with a laser (hand held) west bound. No warning apart from a friendly bike in the other direction... Pulling over scooters mostly by the looks :)
