If laying the bike up for a few months, should the Optimate charger be connected on a permanent basis, or just a few hours every week I do intend to get out on the bike, when the roads are dry, but not when covered in grit/salt
"Charge maintenance: during alternate 30 minute periods, at a float limit of 13,6V the battery is offered charge current (up to the maximum) it needs to sustain it against any small connected loads or power leakage and against natural self-discharge. OptiMate 5 can stay connected to the battery indefinitely and the battery will stay cool and safe. And optimally charged. Of course."
Mines connected every time the bike is stationary at home, be that overnight or when I'm away on a holiday, does it no harm at all as the whole principle of the optimate is not to have to worry about it being connected and cooking the battery.
Me too; connected all the time whilst in the garage. I have done this for years & never had a battery problem.
Mine is also connected when not in use the same as the kit car. both Optimates (model 2 and 4) are mounted on the roof for easy connections when parked. having done this for the last 5-6 years it's never been a issue
As above, Brad. The bike gets rolled into the garage and plugged into the Optimate out of habit. It could be there overnight or for a month.
No electrickery in my garage but I leave mine permanently connected to a solar panel charger. Always used to leave mine connected in old place where I did have a supply amd never had a problem.
I use this one from Maplins. I had it in a north(ish) facing window last year and the bike started first time despite being sat there from about Oct to March/April. One tip is to try and tie it somewhere secure as the rubber suction pads aren't the best.
Got my Optimate 4 screwed to the garage ceiling then the charge lead just drops directly down to the Bike when it's on it's stands.
