Some of you who have seen me at various events over the past couple of years will have seen and in some cases made comment about the original Kawasaki Z1 we had on the stand with us. Well the bike belongs to the senior partner and it is now up for sale. I don't have much info regarding how much he wants for it, but if anyone is interested, I will be happy to provide an email address so that you can contact him for further info
I bought a brand new Z1 in 1973. It was one of the worst bikes I've ever ridden. I sold it to a workmate and a few weeks later, for no reason at all, it threw him up the road. I had warned him but he wouldn't listen. Cost him about 2lbs of meat off his bum and 10 weeks off work. I swear the frame had a hinge in it. Bullet proof engine but the frame was made out of spaghetti.
Well who wouldn't? But if you want a nice old bike that's a pleasure to own and ride get yerself a BSA A7 or Triumph tiger 100. Nick.
Call me picky, but I prefer bikes that start and stop easily and don't leak oil everywhere. I'll stick to classic Jap bikes thanks.
Jap bikes 70s 80s 90s you can't go wrong for reliability looks and build quality.Gpz1100 b2 or a Vf1000r would be my choice and of course any 2 stroke. Z1 looks the part, good investment too at the right money.
It's a myth that all those early Jap' bikes were reliable and didn't leak oil. Both the CB 750s' I bought from new (a 1970 'K0' and, a year later, a 'K1'.) were prone to leaking from the (horizontal!) joint between the cylinder block and the crank-case and the case-hardening of an exhaust camshaft of a brand new GPz900 gave way in a most spectacular fashion one afternoon whilst I was in 3rd lane on the M1. And, while we're on the subject, BMWs' ( I've owned a few) so-called quality is well over-rated. I've been biking since the early fifties and I have no particular axe to grind but I threw my 'Rose-Tinted' glasses away a long time ago. So, when I say my present bike, (an '11 'blade) is far and away the best bike I've ever owned and, even at 3 years old, is up there with 'the best of the best', I think I can claim, in all modesty, to know what I'm on about. Just lovin' it........
I'd rather mine drink it than leave a puddle wherever it goes.If it leaks there's a chance of it ending up on the back wheel.
