I went up to Somerset yesterday to pick up my daughter's birthday present and discovered some great roads I would never have seen otherwise and this got me thinking; there must be tonnes of great rides I'm missing out on. I was wondering if it would be possible to set up a map, like the members location map as a database for Britain's best roads for members to tag and share their favourite's. Could be useful for visitors and locals like me who seem to do the same ride over and over again. Is this possible and would anyone use it?
Great idea mate. There's a thread on here from a while ago where we had a go at this but it never made sticky status. Recently when I've needed a quick pootle I've been driving by you and up the old A38. It's virtually abandoned now. And Tiverton to Dunster on a good day is unbeatable. http://1000rr.co.uk/events-meetings-ride-outs/3784.htm http://1000rr.co.uk/events-meetings-ride-outs/369.htm
Again mostly forgotten by the great unwashed, but what's the Tarmac like. The A377's like a washboard these days. Do you know who it is that Kevin takes his Blade to for work. It's a little one man band somewhere behind the 'Merry Harriers'?
Did a group ride a few years ago with Wiltshirebikers down to Lynmouth along the A39 and loved the views as we headed down the hill. Great fish and chips at the pub and then we split from the group and headed further west for for the kind of blat you just dont get in group rides. Another road i enjoyed but have only driven and not ridden is the A384 from the A38 southbound, very twisty and loved it in the car and thought at the time what a great biking road. For my sins i have yet to take to the mountains in Wales on the bike.................best i have done it Llandow and the M4 lol
Spot on with the 384 mate, especially out of season and dry. Damp, it can turn you religious quick with run off and grit on blind apexes. In summer beware of troops of marauding caravanners, with little understanding of the size of their vehicles or limits of the articulation of the thing they're driving, but yes, in a car, shit hot.
I've got to go with the Scottish Highlands, and the Borders. I'd also say the lake district has some stunning scenery, but can be busy during summer periods.
Bishop Auckland across the top of the Pennines, through Alston, past the Hartside Top Cafe down to Penrith, fill up with fuel and ride back up to Hartside, fill myself up with a slice of their meat and potato pie and tea, have a pee, smoke a fag and then ride all the way back to Teesside. Creature of habit?? Maybe just a little Oh and if you catch it on the right day you might just end up punching through the clouds and being faced with something like this. Not my pic.
