I used Here maps with the European Countries downloaded in advance so no data connection needed.

Didn't have one problem in around 2,000 miles (that's on Android phone) Had bluetooth link to cheap ebay headset I also used for music streaming

I use CoPilot app on my Samsung phone, works very well and is cheap enough @ 16 quid for UK or 23 quid for Europe. Maps are downloaded to your phone and stored on it.
Also you can subscribe to ActiveTraffic for 7.99 which keeps you updated with traffic jams along your route. Link below if you fancy it.

we use windows phones, the old onetakes here drive easy, but our new windows 10 ones have no here drive compatable apps, I have downloaded as suggested the maps where we are going onto my old phone, so that should get us moving. Will look at co-pilot on the new ones
