I have a unique opportunity to work in London for a while (3 years contract). I've been weighing the options and would like some input. I've not spent much time in London and not for many years. The office is located in Knightsbridge, south of Hyde Park. I know nothing of the area except what I've read. As an avid motorcyclist, what can I expect? Any good roads out that way? Give me the lowdown on the area, if you can.
If your company/employer is not paying accommodation, first do a search on prices. It is horrendous! Can't help you with riding around London. Not many do now. All their bikes and scooters have been stolen!
They pay for housing. I’d need to find something reasonably local as I’d be commuting. They provide a company car so that’s sorted. I’d pick up a bike myself. Wherever I live would have to have a garage for the bike. I’m not opposed to a commute to get out of the area as long as accommodations are suitable. Seems I’ve a bit of research to do.
God I'd rather set fire to my hair than live in London with a bike Although if you bring your sniper rifle skills over as well, you could probably assist with the scum infestation!
I wouldn’t ride a bike in London now and I’m a Londoner, the theft in the capital now is horrendous and the insurance premiums would be the most expensive anywhere and it’s just not enjoyable as you will spend more time sitting still
Pmsl....I'd forgot about that I keep thinking decisions decisions... Long Island or London? It's a bit like Kelly Brook or Gemma Collins
I'd be happy to do a house/bike swap with Spygoat for the 3 years Lovely little market town, frequent trains to London and right on the doorstep of our glorious northern biking roads! Have to look after the dog though & he trumps a lot but nothing air freshner can't sort
You can't move in a car and if your on a decent 2 wheeler expect to be hunted down and covered in acid or stab wounds. Other than that it's ok.
I work for a private security/intelligence firm so not too worried about theft issues. If I take the assignment I’d likely keep the bike somewhere secure at our facility after reading all this. Lol.
Bring it over and leave it with Nigel, he'll probably want to dress it up in little outfits but it'll be loved
Forget the company car ESPECIALLY around Hyde Park/Knightsbridge...you'll end up killing yourself (or someone else in Road Rage). Commuting in London can be fun..I do it everyday. You'll have to acclimatise, there are plenty of plod around to catch you speeding or nipping round the traffic islands the wrong way , but they're nowhere in f****g sight when there is a bike theft. Cameras everywhere so you'd have to learn when and where.... The only way to have a bike is to have garage at home and secure parking at work, else you can expect to get it nicked. Jaunts out can be had, from London to south coast you're looking at about an hour-hour and a half there. There are plenty of good roads once you're out of the main M25 (orbital motorway/car park). I'd do it were I in your position!
I work in London and wouldn't dream of driving/riding there. Too many pond life around who will stab you to get your bike when you are stopped at the lights. As for having fun forget it, god knows the average speed in London but I doubt it is much over single figures. On the upside there are some decent places outside the M25 where you can commute on the Train/Tube in under an hour, and have decent roads on the weekend to go riding on.
As a non-Londoner I hope I can read about some good points also. There must be many: shopping; seeking out Royals; live re-enactments of Jack the Ripper tours; and enjoying the special spots so reminiscent of The Bronx.
London is a fantastic place to socialise. West end clubs. restaurants, theatre...all the tourist stuff. Awesome. Just costs a pretty penny is all...
