Ok , here goes Mate of mine has a pammy girly and wants the wheels powder coating a nice gold colour. Will look well I reckon, black wheels very boring. Anyway who knows a company that will make a good job, ie take great care of the bike strip it down , rebuild with new wheel bearings etc etc And can you actually powder coat wheels and damage them if your a "Mickey Mouse" outfit ? Yorkshire area Cheers
Here you go Danum Powder Coating - Contact us They reckon on around £200 for a set of car wheels, so should be no more for a pair of bike wheels.
there are some specific powder coaters that deal with bike parts .. if you look on the wire fence at squires sherburn ,there are a couple on there that do it. i would be amazed if they stripped the bike down though . i would take a picture of the wheel with the parts that you do not want coating i.e. where the wheel mounts and fasten it to the wheel with instructions saying to mask out these areas before applying the powder coat,as it took me 3 hours to scrape and sand it off my wheels so that they would mount correctly again.
Don't go for cheap as I did with my Scooby wheels, they all cracked so had to scrap'em, reputable companies who know what there doing is best option. There's also the dipping option, supposed to be very good I'm told.
who does the dipping ? as i have had a problem with a wheel spoke cracking on my ducati . there was a small casting mark on one of the spokes which cracked all the way around after 7000 miles. i have just got a new wheel off ducati under warranty so am a bit dubious about shot blasting it.
I'll find out name, it's a mate of mine but don't know name of company, was talking to him about this last week. They dip then lacquer apparently. I've seen some on FB too, just search dipping.
Some companies burn off then shotblast which can cause problems and also they don't all heat'em to correct temps which changes molecular structure so I'm told.
Have heard of someone who had his done and they removed bearings then shot blasted entire wheel so when he went to fit new bearings they were loose Guess it pays to shop about and get honest reviews of their work or recommendations from people who have used them.
If you get the wheels blast cleaned make sure they use sand or glass bead and not shot, that would just wreck the wheels and be apparent after powder coating. On a side note there won't be any change to molecular structure as the powder coating only requires 180-200 degrees celsius to stove, to change molecular structure you would have to heat over 600 degrees.
