Stripped bolts seem to be a common thing on my blade. Trying to remove the air box to fit the quick shifter 5 screws no issues 6th the head just disintegrates now in tatters! FUMING am I just unlucky?
nope! on my 05 they are crap and was thinking if it was just on mine like you are, thought honda = good build quality??
Normally a stripped head is caused by not using the correct size allen key or type of screw driver. I see my lads at work using a phillips head in a normal cross point screw all the time and stripping heads but they never learn (even after you've pointed out their mistake)
I have just changed my RR5 for a new bike and IMO they have gone down further in their build quality, however check out Suzuki and especially Yamaha, my friend rides a 2000 R1 and we were comparing the overall finish against a new one, you would have thought they were built by 2 different companies, the 2000 model is finished off much better than the new bike, the finish on the frame brake discs etc
Fear not, I did the exact same thing with the 6th airbox screw on my blade, had to get an extract kit. Have replaced it with a decent quality allen bolt (may do the others so they match. To be honest, I think I was using the wrong screw driver , and once it slipped tried again without changing driver and that was it, knackered....
Every fixing on my bike appears to be original and every one of them is in perfect condition. Except one. One fixing on the offside front brake calliper keeps spotting with rust. I keep cleaning it but it just comes back. I just can't be arsed to swap them all out for the sake of it.
IMO partly the way of life that build quality isn't how it was by manufactures trying to be competitive on cost, partly people using the wrong tools. If you think Honda build quality has suffered try working on other vehicle brands! I've got a 370z that got corrosion in places my twelve year old golf looks brand new, partly the brand, partly life.
Dave - it's a Nissan??? Seriously though, yes we should have a level of quality that we should all get from ANY manufacturer, but we can't have it all.... Think how long 1000cc bikes remained at the 11k mark, something has got to give!! Bike prices stood still for years, yet every year power increased, weight dropped & gizmos got better???
Well i have been over my new (to me) 2002 954 with a fine tooth combe, i have cleaned every inch of it, all fairings removed and up on stands and cleaned to death ! I can tell you all the original fixings and bolts and clips etc are still in excellent condition, it has been well looked after by the previous owner but it has not been a garage queen, it has been ridden throughout the year but apart from the usual wear and tear it is just fine.
Many types of Philips screws, never had a problem with them tbh however I have removed a good number that people have snapped off in the throttle bodies! I guess that's the one you mean.. If they feel tight I impact them undone..
I was using the impact and made sure I had the correct bit for the screw head. First hit and it was like the screw was brittle. All the others were ok though and got the damaged one out in the end. Took a while though! Need a new screw as well now. Hoping Honda keep them in stock!
PM done, mate sorry I did not link your problem to the quote, if you need any help just let me know, I should have a screw that you can have..if Honda don't have one, or call Fowlers they should also have them. Or ask Cox or MrB on here!
I just replaced pretty much all my bolts with pro bolt, good bye stripped screws hello shiny stainless ones
Well a trip to honda this morning and 6 new bolts. Thought sod it just replace them all although when the salesman said "that will be £18.75 please sir" i nearly fell over! £18.75 for 6 bolts they have cheek!!! Anyway the bike is back together now no more issues and the Quickshifter is done! Tested it up on the stand and it works. Just needs a road test to see how it performs and if it needs tweeking. Second time round it would be easier with more planned method!
