Remove rear cowl, split rear subframe removing one side at a time. One side off, unscrew peg, refit and then do the same on the other side. This keeps the battery tray in place.

These are my notes from my iPhone... for an abs model, if it's not abs then ignore the abs bits!

Credit to wherever I copied the base from, but can't remember where (or if I even copied them in the first place!!)

CBR1000RR Pillion pegs removal / reinstall

    Remove pillion seat
    Remove seat
Remove tank cover bolts (or entire tank cover)
    Remove 4 cowl fairing bolts
Slide cowl back (when re-installing, ensure tabs are slid into place at bottom)
Remove 4 bolts holding pillion seat catch mechanism
Pull fuse box out (use a screwdriver to release clip)
    Remove bolt under fuse box
    Remove 4 bolts under cowl
Remove small plastic popper screw on rhs under cowl
    Cowl will now drop down
Remove bolt holding side arms together
Remove 1 side at a time:-
2 big bolts (54Nm) - bottom bolt has a nut behind it - be sure to catch it!
1 bolt holding tank in place
2 bolts under cowl similar to catch mechanism
On RHS remove two bolts for abs pipe stay (be careful when reinstalling and make sure cable and pipes not caught)
RHS has abs stay clamp and bolts are in place with spacer nuts - disregard spacer nuts when reinstalling pegs.

All of us with 08 - 16s ask the same question. 04 - 07s are easy as are 2017 - 19s. I think it was just the 'neatness' factor.
