I bought a key and a micro chip off Ebay, I had the key cut local then programmed the key chip using instructions off Youtube. all worked fine
dealer wanted about £150 for the key, I paid about £20

Just had the same problem with my 2007. Ended up getting 2x extra keys cut from an ebay seller (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/125446745496) which were perfect ,even look identical to my existing OEM honda keys.

To program you can put together your own harness but for the sake of £20 I just bought one also off ebay (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/223986882999)

I just followed the procedure in this video

Very straightforward procedure honestly once you've got fairings off...

The pain in the arse is taking the fairings off, why do most jobs require this, The R1 fairings came off easy, the CBR is a pain for this, Why should you have to remove a fairing to program a key

I would wonder about eBay key cutters
They have you key and know where you live
    Or is it just me

Agree but there are some with good reputation and that would be extremely low risk. Could always get them sent to another address like you do with your naughty toys :D

mine came as a blank from Ebay, got the local key cutter to duplicate then programmed the chip.
security is not an issue in my case

They are not able to duplicate the HISS coding without an existing key nearby. The only risk is they can disable steering lock on the bike - but if that's your only security measure then....

I am not sure but now I think they can duplicate keys and chips, but they would need the original key to do this,

Guys, thanks so much (again) for your help and guidance. I sent the eBay guy a photo and he will cut and post the key to me in the morning! How fantastic is that!

Will order one of those reprogramme sets too - thanks again.

From memory, the red plug that was supposed to be behind the fairing was actually more under the tank, they must change positions on different bikes
