Still getting to grips with 2007 'blade... friday just gone was the first time I'd ridden it in properly hot weather (and it was HOT). Perhaps I shouldnt compare it to my previous blade (an RRY 929) but it doesnt seem to be able to cool itself as easily. The old bike would run at a stable temp from 30mph on the hottest days... the 2007 blade seems to need 40+ in order to start bringing the temperature under control. Further, the cooling fan doesnt seem nearly effective enough. The old blade, when idling, if it hit 103 the fan kicks in and within a minute is back down to 96 at which point the fan goes off. On the new bike, fan kicked in at 103 and the temp kept climbing!!! It stabilised at about 106, but the fan wasnt bringing the temp down... I chickened out, and took off through the traffic at silly speeds, fearing the bike was about to blow up if I had stayed still. What are other members experiences with running this blade on a very hot day? If I hadnt have panicked and took off, would the bike have overheated, or would the fan have kept it safe? Being a Honda, you tend to think all would have been fine, but I didnt have the balls to find out!
It may have been just a one off due to the very high outside temp .Although i have not experianced it the traffic lights usualy change as it creeps to about 103 have you had the coolant changed ?
what is the max operating temp ? Someone posted them on before I am sure. I have a 07 blade and mine does something similar but its never bothered me as I am sure the max temp is around 120 or something or perhaps even higher
obviously as the cooling system works under pressure the bike can run at higher temps ( as in ,100c doesn't boil it) but depending on what the pressure rating n the cap is gives different boiling temps. i think in this weather as soon as you stand still for a bit it wil get hot very quickly,my track bike does and runs quite hot aswell even when out.my 07 ran at high 80's,and the new blade even higher.just trying a different cap atm to see what,if any difference it makes
Cheers for the reassurance lads... a bit of googling turned up a few more owners saying the same. I'll just stop being such a fanny and stop worrying about it. On the practical side though, going to aim a soft jet of water CAREFULLY through the radiator fins to ensure radiator is tip-top... and I also believe that the coolant is original (so, getting on for 5 years old!)....... so gonna get that changed too! Whats the established wisdom regards coolant/anti-freeze products? Also, do you guys advocate using any additives? (e.g. water wetter)
I've just bought 5L of pre mixed Comma G30 coolant on a recommendation from another member. http://item.mobileweb.ebay.co.uk/viewitem?itemId=110793427851&index=0&nav=SEARCH&nid=83502572185
Just buy a descent brand and get it changed BUT just sounds to me like a hot day and remember you probs just been making it sing for 30 miles before you got in traffic!! Chill and ride it dont look to much at temp gauge it a honda man!!
how easy is it to change the coolant - anyone got a step by step guide ? fancy doing mine now - does it get done at 8000 mile service by the way ? Or the 4000k one ?
had the temp on my 2011 blade up to 110 but it was about 40 degrees in Sept last year. And went to about 104 this weekend when in the pit lane before going on track
Well, I've just had the 4000 mile service done, and they didnt change the coolant... fairly sure its an "8000 mile or 2 years" job...
