Didn't realise it at the time but I went £25 overdrawn last month on my pocket money account. Cleared it as soon as I realised and didn't think much of it until I just checked my account. The robbing gits have hit me with £90 of charges!!! Worst bit is that they have charged me £25 for a£1.49 purchase, and another £25 for a £2.39 purchase. Wonder why the t**ts just didn't reject the card at payment time, surely it would be cynical to suggest it was so they could fleece me! Anyway I've messaged the thieving gits and told them I want my money back as the charges are disproportionate, won't hold my breath though. Anyone got any experience of taking stuff like this to the ombudsman etc?
Surely if your overdrawn your overdrawn and only one charge should be applied unless you go into a new month.
You prob' don't have a leg to stand on because it's all in the small print. The small print is as you know very small and often very long but can be summed up as: "we are a bunch of mercenary tw**s and have many ways to screw you good and proper should you slip up in any way because that's one of the main ways we make money, have a nice day".
£90 is a seriously big charge for going a few quid overdrawn, hell if you were £2k overdrawn it would still be over the top. If I was in your position and didn't get any joy I'd close my account and take my business elsewhere.
Cheers all. Had hoped to be less pee'd off this morning but am actually feeling more belligerent towards them lol Nope. They charge you a fee for going overdrawn, and a fee for every transaction whilst you are overdrawn. At least Dick Turpin wore a mask unlike these b*****ds Probably true but I'm not going quietly. I know a little, as in very little, about consumer based law and I know that small print can not be used for "unfair" terms. Also charges have to be reasonable, proportionate and not punitive. Whatever the outcome I will most likely be moving elsewhere. It's an account I used for my business expenses like fuel and so is not a major requirement. Have contacted via online, will see what they say.
I forgot to pay my visa bill one month. I always pay anything I put on my CC every month. If I don't have the money I won't use it. they wanted to charge me about £75. So I phoned them up and explained I would give them 2 choices. 1) I will pay the amount and charge in full and then leave. They could see I have never missed a bill and always pay my debts. or 2) remove the charge and I will pay the bill and stay with them. they picked no 2 So I would suggest you give them a call and do the same. they will loose you for the charge or keep you on as a customer.
I would sort it face to face in a branch if I were you, they will want you to leave happy and keep you calm. So they don't have a sceen develop infront of them! It will be all to easy for someone at a computer the other end to say no!
Santander usually refund the charges, so maybe worth speaking to them over the phone? I had charges last year for using my card abroad, they refunded just over £100. It is at their discretion though i suppose.
I had this with First Direct, the small print saying "a charge of £25.- will be applied for every overdraft not arranged....." meaning, once overdrawn, ever further amount taken out would attract the £25.- which like you made me really feel like I had been robbed. However, First Direct removed this a while ago, and I thought they did this as new legislation came into force, making this sort of 'legalised robbery' illegal. I could be wrong though, and they perhaps just did it as they discovered their true sense of customer service and humanity (yeah, right ) In any case, I would speak to the Ombudsman, or the MA (Money Advice Service) who have been advertising their services recently. Good luck mate!
Face to face is def better and they will try to just reduce a tiny bit first but just explain your not happy with that and they will chip away at it
Face to face is difficult as I am currently on an industrial estate and can't get to a branch during work hours. Will have to see how it goes with electronic contact first.
Santader here is open 7 days a week and until about 8pm which is one thing that has kept me with them I presumed that was everywhere
Well I heard back from them. Charges were actually £115 as I had missed a £25 charge when checking online Better news is that they have refunded most of the charges, but say they can't do them all as it went over a statement date, and that this is a one time goodwill gesture. Will try and pop into the branch on the weekend to see if I can get the rest back, if not I will probably just tell them to close the account.
This is how they work, if you kick up a fuss they'll maybe refund you some or all the money, but most people don't and that's how they like it.
They charged me up to 25 GBP a couple of times. But be aware, all this will damage your credit score report .
This sort of stuff will have absolutely no effect on any credit rating whatsoever. You'll be needing to get into proper debt to do that.
All banks are thieving greedy twats. My daughter recently bought herself a newer car. She bought it from a large dealership, on finance obviously, the dealership took her old car in PX and paid the remaining finance on it as part of the deal. The previous agreement was with Barclays Bank, who have always given her hassle, banging on charges for late payment even when she wasn't late paying etc. Anyway..the dealers sent Barclays a cheque for the full amount and settled her account, so she had no more to pay on the old agreement. Barclays finance agreement now closed. 1 month later she gets a letter from Barclays saying that she was in arrears for a missed payment for that month and she now owed that missed payment plus charges, so she rings Barclays and asks what them what they are playing at. They say that they have received no such final balance payments and she owes them the money. So she rings the dealers, who are very helpful and sympathetic and explain that the money has most definitely been paid and that Barclays have cashed the cheque because the money has been debited from their bank account. So it's a case of f*%k you Barclays, you have been paid, the direct debit that was set up has been cancelled, so you can't even try to take money your not entitled to. So she then gets many, many pestering calls and numerous threatening letters. Luckily, she has a friend who used to work for Barclays finance dept, who tells her to ring up and ask for the escalations dept. but also to contact the financial ombudsmen. The escalation dept. then look at the account...oh...yes....we have received a cheque..we are very sorry...blah blah Two month later....another threatening letter.....for £3k..missed payments plus charges. So she rings them...they then say that both she and the dealers are lying about the money being sent, they have no record of any cheques or any other dealings. Back to the dealers, with friend in tow who does the talking. Dealers finance dept read the letter..pop off for a couple of minutes and return with bank statements showing all transactions and with a very angry look on faces whilst dialling Barclays. Dealers have said that Barclays are just unscrupulous and badly run with many many ombudsmen rulings against them. Told my daughter to not worry as it's the bank thats at fault, if there are any charges outstanding against her they will cover them, they are not having Barclays trying to brandish them liars and non payers when it's Barclays who can't keep track of a simple financial everyday transaction.
